Moongels are probably expensive for what they really are, but they're great and I use them for such situations. I tune drums to get the most resonance and ring often comes w/ that. Tune for the most body and resonance, then use moongels on the batter at the edge until you get what you want. If...
Thanks. No, I dindn't mean for "grind" to be taken literally... it doesn't make a noise, it just seems like it wants to start rewinding and then stops... like it's not strong enough to get the job done. I'm using the right tape (1 mil, 1800', 7" reels).
I'll look to see what the tension arm is...
The "right" motor seems to work fine (play, record, fast forward) but the "left" one grinds to a halt after a split second, and I have to manually rewind. Anyone know how difficult it is to change this out? I can't spend another couple hundred to have it repaired. I'm not the most mechanically...
Sweet...thanks. Once the tracks are recorded, do I have a choice of whether the track w/ added effects overwrites the original track or whether I record the effects on another track? I'm interested in having reverb panned away from the original (for shaker, for instance), but mostly I won't have...
Oh, and I'm recording drums in a room w/ hardwood floors, etc... 10' high ceilings, and about 15' X 20' room, one end opens to a dining room. Should I try recorderman set-up, or something wider and more open to start with? I know how to tune drums :D
Does anyone know if there's a clip somewhere where I can hear before fixing/after fixing phase issues on drum overheads? I'm new to home recording and want to know what I'm listening for. Thanks!
I'm definitely a noob at engineering home recordings. I've got a Tascam 388, great mics, etc... and my first session is this week. I'm picking up a reverb unit and a compressor/expander for the sessions. Much of the recording will be live (one kick, two drum OHs, electric guitar amp, vocals)...
@RRuskin @sweetbeats Wow, thanks. I was totally unaware that there was a manufacturer currently making new reels. I'll get some new ones.
Should be posting clips here in a couple weeks. :)
@RRuskin yeah, I'm going to try to get some Ampex 292 or Quantegy 457 reels. I may get some used Scotch reels cheap on ebay to get started...testing, messing around, etc. The 3mil thick tape definitely strained the 388... wouldn't rewind, etc. Only tried it a couple times, so I think the 388 is...
Fixed
Thanks all for the help. A friend figured it out... some issue with the internal preamp or something. I don't know, but it works now.
I'm getting a good amount of rookie mistakes out of the way. Bought 7" reels of 1/4" tape, but it's 3mil, 1400' rather than 1mil, 1800'. Damn. Looks like...
@RRuskin. No, the problem isn't solved.
@technoplayer. I've recorded in many studios over the years (w/ others as engineers), but I'm definitely a noob w/ home recording...other than some BS stuff on a 4 track. No offense taken, and I'm truly hoping it's user error on my part.
I've got the...
Thanks. The line input toggle switch is definitely in the right position... "Mic" for when I'm going into the XLR w/ the mic. I switch to "Line" if I'm going in from the preamp to the 1/4" input.
Chain
Dynamic Mic Chain (pre-amp issue)
Shure Beta 52 > XLR input on 388 (tried all tracks). No signal at all received.
Shure Beta 52 > XLR input on Audio Buddy (phantom turned off). 1/4" out from Audio Buddy to 1/4" input on 388. The AudioBuddy doesn't have XLR outs. Getting a great signal...
So I picked up a 388, and the only way I can get any signal from a mic input is to run it through one of my M-Audio Audio Buddy preamps. Testing is with a few dynamic mics. Plug them straight into the 388, and I get nothing at all. Run it through the preamp and the signal's good. Is this normal...
Hey all. I'm relatively new here, been reading through to pick up tips, etc. I'm a digital refugee going analog, and I'm single so my whole place is my studio if I like. I picked up a TASCAM 388 a couple weeks ago and ProTech in Silver Spring MD just replaced the broken belt.
I'll post up...
Aquarian Heads
I almost exclusively use Aquarian now. They seem to be better balanced, sound great, and they last seemingly forever...almost tuning themselves as they get older. My current exception is the batter on the kick...where I use an Evans EMAD, and an Aquarian SuperKick for the reso...
Thanks Beagle
One of these options looks good. Trying to figure out which one uses the same reels as the Studio 8. 7" 1/4 inch reels, 40 minutes.
I'll probably go w/ the Tandberg until I find a Tascam 22/32/42 to buy. Saw one on Ebay for $300...slightly pricey...but the idea of staying w/...
