Has anyone replaced a motor in a 388?

Vintage: I like your "long shot" idea... It will likely be this weekend before I put some investigative work on this. I'll definitely let you know what I find and if I solve the issue. Much appreciated!

consolidating space: angled Tascam 388+swiveling racks

That is a sweet set-up. I'm lucky in that I've got my 388 on a big dresser at the bottom of the stairs, w/ the stairs going up behind the unit w/ no wall, giving me easy access.

Effect Sends - Where in the process?

Thanks Hornet. Do you apply the effects during the stereo mixdown, or are they painted onto the track you're running it through? Or can you put the reverb effect on another track? Until I get my hands on the outboard effects and a two-track reel to reel, I'm actually dumping each track...

Thanks y'all. I've got a few good leads from you guys.

    Bad motor in 388

Thanks Aaron... I'll conduct the operation this weekend! BTW, my first round of recording on the 388 (and my first time engineering/home recording) went very well. I'm amazed at the sound of the 388 and the fullness and depth of the drum tracks I got. As soon as I figure out how to post up an...

Has anyone replaced a motor in a 388?

Thanks guys. I guess it could be sticky tape... I'll have to research that a bit to know what I'm looking for. Basically the same problem occurred using brand new RGMI reels as well as "older" new 406 reels (I don't have the year on those at the moment - I know the 406's are slightly thicker...

Has anyone replaced a motor in a 388?

The "left" motor in my 388 is dead... when I press Rewind, it seems like it tries to get going, but stalls. I have to manually rewind the tape, which isn't a huge deal, just annoying and not acceptable in the long run. Play/Fast Forward work perfectly. I don't have the money to take it to the...

Kick mic position w/in Recorderman setup

Nice Dogbreath! I'm going to build two... I'm thinking about building a smaller one to mic up the rear of an Orange git amp as well... see if I can capture some low end out of the amp. Recording this weekend went well. I'll do a quick mixdown and post the tracks. For my first time doing my own...

    Cracked Cymbal

I agree w/ the sentiments here, get a new cymbal since a B8Pro isn't worth saving... but... keep that one the way it is for a weird, trashy effects cymbal. It may take 10 years before you have a use for it, but it could come in handy some day.

    how to mix analog

I used to love being in the studio with something like a 16-24 track board going onto 2" reels, w/ 2 or 3 people all participating in the mix down. It's like art, craft, and sport all rolled into one. Lots of fun.

    3 mil tape in a 388

Thanks man. The 406 reels I got are sticky shed free. I'll go w/ the new RMGI reels going forward, but will make use of the 5 406 reels I've got on hand. I love this forum. Y'all rule!

Kick mic position w/in Recorderman setup

Sweet... The price is right! I'll build one of them damn things.

    3 mil tape in a 388

Thanks for that clarification. Now I'm tempted to use them, considering variances of .5 mil seem to be common.

Kick mic position w/in Recorderman setup

I'm definitely interested. I've used the Yamaha subkick on stage once (it was the opening band's drummer's subkick) and I thought it was cool and sounded deep when he was playing (couldn't tell when I was playing, but I'm not the intended target). Too expensive... I'd love to learn how to...

    3 mil tape in a 388

I've got a couple correct reels, but curious if I should just turn around and ebay the 3 mil ones... which I don't want to do b/c I've never sold anything on Ebay anyways...

    3 mil tape in a 388

I got a few reels by accident (I know it's supposed to run w/ only 1 mil tape). Load/RTZ functionality aside, will using this tape thickness damage the 388? Burn out the motors quickly...or over time if I keep using them?

Kick mic position w/in Recorderman setup

Yeah, I use a b52 as well, and need more bottom/reso, since I've got a two-person band, drums and electric guitar...so I need all the bottom I can get since there's no bass going on!

    rock on! Thanks.

Kick mic position w/in Recorderman setup

If using the Recorderman OH setup, does it make sense to place the kick mic the same distance from the strike point of the batter head as the two overheads are? I never see that mentioned, but was wondering if there's ever phase issues with the kick if the kick mic is closer to the impact point...
