Hey, To answer your question: I'm not too familiar with the M-15--one came up for sale here locally and I saw some pictures. It certainly looks nice. I would be inclined to worry about its age it wasn't very well taken care though... I've actually used my friends' M-3500 for a little bit--I...

Tacam 58 won't record on any channels

We'll here's hoping that power supply re-cap job will fix yours!

Tacam 58 won't record on any channels

Strangely enough, cleaning the tape oxide pieces and gunk off that PCB seemed to fix it. (I had already tried re-seating all the pins and headers related the record function to no avail). I don't discount the possibility that it could have been completely unrelated to the problem and that maybe...

Tacam 58 won't record on any channels

Hi Greg, The track arming switches (record enable/sync pre-load--maybe the remote switch too, I'm at work and I can't recall exactly) on the 58 are connected to two PCBs -- Function A on top and Function B on the bottom. I tried to make sense of the schematic and saw that the record signal was...

Tacam 58 won't record on any channels

I hope it goes swimmingly Greg! For the record, cleaning the 'Function A' PCB (track arming) seems to have fixed the record issue on the 58. It was pretty gummy and grimy with years worth of tape particles.

Tacam 58 won't record on any channels

I do have a service manual, but it very kind of you to offer! You're probably right that I have a plug not fully seated--those little pin and header things are the bane of my existence (I built an 1176 with a bunch of them without the proper crimp tool--they kept popping out of the housing)...

    Post Your Analog Recordings Here...

Hey thanks for the kind words Dodge! I have fond memories recording that one cuz it was the first thing we ever did on the MS16. Also, my girlfriend imposed a sort of 'oblique strategy' on the backwards tracks where there was a 'one-take-no-chance-to-rehearse' rule. Very fun for us to do but...

Tacam 58 won't record on any channels

Hey Greg, Thanks for sharing that. I'm thinking in my case it isn't the main oscillator board because I have a working 58-OB at my disposal and I tried plugging its main oscillator board into the problem machine and there was no change. And I was also able to get the problem machine to erase...

    Post Your Analog Recordings Here...

This one is a couple years old already, but it was fun for us to make because of the tape effects. Apart from a smidgeon of spring reverb on the vox (too little reverb I'd say in retrospect) the tape manipulations are the only effects...

Hmm, strange problem with new RMG SM468 tapes...

Hi Fred, Just to clarify, did you try going back and trying the 456 after you noticed the issue? I ask because it sounds like a common description of the sound of heads that are magnetized. If it's an indeed a problem related to the tape stock, I'd guess that maybe the bias is a bit low for the...

When / Where do I put the Gate / Compression ... all that. on Tape or during Mixdown?

Hi digidoon, Just for my 2¢ on your original question: I've found that compressing to tape can be a good way to minimize tape hiss if you're not using noise reduction. These days I nearly always compress the snare a little bit while tracking. I love using expander/gates for creative effects but...

Tacam 58 won't record on any channels

Hi all, I was repairing some of those infamously dodgy rca connection on the mother pcb of a friend's 58-OB (incidentally this issue was exacerbated by the fact the machine had been dropped at one point and the RCAs bore much of the brunt) and that all went OK (but what a hellish job getting at...

    Tascam 25-2 questions

Hey folks, Long time no post. I hope everyone is well! Anyhow, some friends of mine have a Tascam 25-2 That has a couple issues: 1) (the serious one) the lifters will not disengage when the machine is in play. *edit: fixed--exercising the Edit switch got the lifters to disengage. 2) (less...

Tascam M-600 opinions and/or pdf manual

Hey thanks for the info (and the kind words) Cory! I must confess that I'd mistakenly assumed that Soundtraks were exclusively FOH mixers. I must also confess that at least a small part of the reason I'm looking for the M-600 manual is because I derive some kind of sick pleasure from reading...

Tascam M-600 opinions and/or pdf manual

Hi Allen, Wow I have no idea. hmmm maybe $500 Canadian dollars when the day comes? But I really can't sell it until I find a bigger mixer that fits my budget (which may take a while).

Tascam M-600 opinions and/or pdf manual

Hi all, I'm beginning to think about acquiring a new mixer in the next year-or-so. I currently use an M-520, which I love, but I'm starting to yearn for a bit more functionality. There's an M-3500 for sale locally, which inspired me to download and study the manual. I need a bit more time to...

    Parametric EQ as mastering tool

Hey, no prob. I should also mention that a lot of folks here seem to love the Tascam PE-40 4-channel parametric EQ (I've never had the chance to try one). I think you'd be able to find one used for a price that's well within your budget.

    Parametric EQ as mastering tool

I'd venture to guess that good quality parametric EQ has probably in the mastering chain the vast majority of commercial releases over the past 30+ years. One of the classics is the Sontec, you can read about it here: http://totalsonicmastering.com/sontec.htm The engineer George Massenburg is...

    dbx NR tips

I agree wholeheartedly about the tambourine being a tough instrument for dbx to handle--in fact just about anything really transient-heavy and percussive sounded a little weird to me when recorded with DBX (even when using very conservative levels). To be honest, I don't really like DBX NR at...
