yaaaa... it was chosing the RANGE of inputs rather than just choosing the amount of inputs that I overlooked.
I jumped the gun too quick on this one :o
Reaper -> Options -> preferences -> Audio -> Device -> Enable inputs
It turns out that you don't just "enable" the adat inputs. You have to tell reaper to enable a range of inputs rather than just telling what inputs it should use.
For instance, instead of telling reaper to use
Input A
Input...
So I bought this behringer ada8000 thing and its awesome and all that but when I go to aarm a track in reaper and I open up the mono input option I still only see input left and input right... I'm not seeing any adat input options.

Preamp -> ada8000 converter -> adat light pipe...
