    Haggling at Guitar Center

Advice so far is great, very interesting. But if I were going to spend $8K on gear, I would go in and make sure that the salesperson knew I was serious about the biggest piece of gear. Let's say that big piece costs $4K. But I would say that I needed that piece only and would act like I had...

    free or inexpensive ACID-style software?

Sheesh, so it is. I guess this is what I get for looking at web sites late at night! I don't know how I didn't come across this... Thanks for the help! And Audactiy is something that I've been meaning to look at as well...

    free or inexpensive ACID-style software?

So the new Duncan Sheik album has a DVD with all the individual instruments in separate wav files (post mixing, I think - so drums are one summed track, vocals have reverb and compression, etc). But it's been fun to play totally different music with these songs and use just the original vocal /...

    bow to 'leper messiah', biznizzles.

It's hard for me to admit, but old-school Metallica fan here too. I like the Metallica cover. It's different in tone, etc, but I think that's what makes it fun. It's your interpretation. Cool song, man.

    octava MK012

At my GC in Indianapolis, the price for the Octava MC012 used to be like $100 or maybe more each. But they would run a special 1-2 times per year where they would sell 2 for $100. This was 2-3 years ago when I bought mine (and I think that I have the Russian ones, but I'm not sure). Based on...

Looking for a collab - Singer needed - Coldplay-ish song

Sorry, I've been distracted by the latest Duncan Sheik album. He included a free DVD with all the raw tracks for each instrument (they are mixed - vocals have compression and reverb, drums are summed to one track, etc). Still, it's darn fun to take his basic guitar and voice tracks and make...

    Which recorder??

With the price for a used ADAT being so low these days, I still think that this is a good choice for people starting out. Especially if you have a board with lots of channels already. I had a Boss BR-8, one of the first all in one recorders, and the sound and detail of an ADAT is much better.

Looking for a collab - Singer needed - Coldplay-ish song

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. I listened to that first Coldplay album quite a bit - so if you are looking to get away from Coldplay-ish melodies, I probably didn't help you with that.. And thanks for the compliments, that's very nice of you!

    PMI Audio Service Question

My vote is for a 58 for rap. Definitely. But only if you cup your hand over the pop screen so that it sounds all crappy and distorted. And only if you are West Coast. Otherwise, the 57 is better for East Coast. I heard that all Nas records are done with a 57. Kidding. I don't get rap, and...

Looking for a collab - Singer needed - Coldplay-ish song

Okay, I've been thinking about this off and on for a while. I came up with something for the chorus, but I'm running short on ideas for the verse. Everything that I come up with just seems too similar to the chorus. Since this thread needs a bump anyway, I thought that I'd post what I have to...

    Recording sesssion docs?

There was a thread about this a whole ago, basically about what contracts are used and what should be included. I don't run a studio, but if I did, I would definitely have a clear document that bands would sign before tracking. This would outline the cost, exactly what they get with that cost...

    Samson C03 - dissapointed

I agree that certain mic's can be really noisy (never had this Samson mic, but I had a Shure Beta Green as my first mic...imagine my surprise when I learned that other mic's existed, made by Shure even, that weren't so hissy!). But pre's can be hissy too. I don't think that's the problem here...

do you think that this idea result in a drum track?

I'm right with you on this idea. I have found that I can play with a metronome if I really have to, but it's just not any fun. Clicks are annoying. And since I'm a one person band kind of guy, if I play 4 takes on guitar, 3 takes on bass, 3 takes on drums with that click.....ugh. Screw it, I...

200$, an acoustic guitar, and your help.

What mic's do you have now? And what don't you like about the sound? Too bright? Too dull? Strange in a mix? Getting the right mic might be just the ticket, but I went through this recently, and I was only satisfied when I got a new acoustic guitar. But I like the MC012. Good luck - I...

    Universal EQ

You may just be experiencing saturation. You've put so much energy into getting the mix perfect in one environment that any change equals a bad change. Maybe let it sit for a while and come back to it. In general, I have the same problem. Mixing is tough. But that's what makes this whole...

    Opinions

I've had mixed results with using line outs from amps. They can sound good, but they can just as easily sound awful (really noisy). Plugging the bass directly into the mixer may actually work better. Try both, see what they sound like. I have also used a Blue Tube for recording bass (bass...

best possible microphone for rap vocals for my home studio

Not to steal the thread, but I've seen this question asked quite a bit. And consendor mic's are usually recommended. I'm not a rapper, and I've never recorded rap. In fact, I'm about as far away from rap as you can be in terms of the personality of music that I'm playing. But my feeling is...

Looking for a collab - Singer needed - Coldplay-ish song

Sure, I'm interested. Not sure how good my singing will be, but I'll give it a shot. Do you have any sense for the words (or exact words)? Or melody for the words? Nice feel to this, I like it.

Is there any such thing as "Best"?

There's something funny about the singer for fallout boy, isn't there? Just something off...he seems a bit imaginary somehow. Oh yeah, your question - my opinion?....no.
