For all of you wannabe system builders...

I would simply avoid IDE completely when building a new system. Easier said than doen on a budget. However, it can be done. Go with SATA HD's, and even a SATA DVD Burner for backups and whatnot. Makes the internal cabling much easier, cleaner, and gives faster operation. But, yes, cooling is a...

Copyright and royalty issues in my band

If you look at Stone Temple Pilots' CD inserts, ever song has "Lyrics by: X, Y, Music: Y, Z" on EVERY SONG. It's not for royalties sakes, they don't care. It's just a way of documenting who did what, so that X can say, "I don't write many lyrics, but I did HERE. . ." and just for interest sakes...

    Songwriting for a beginner

So something along the lines of Cinematic Orchestra? You should have a listen to a guy from around where I live, www.sirhandsomerecords.com . Weird guy, sounds nothing like his talking voice. One-man writing, synthy stuff. Live he uses a 2-octave 19080s Casio Keyboard through a Boss Distortion...

    I need a Soundcard with a USB Port. . .

Yes, they have search functions. But I get all soundcards that connect to your computer VIA your computer's USB in. I need a soundcard with USB IN! Yes, weird. And it's not even for me. It's for a friend. If it was my decision, I'd get 2 different cards, but hey, whatever. But thanks so for...

    I need a Soundcard with a USB Port. . .

I don't need a good one, I just need to locate a cheap one. ANY cheap soundcard with a USB in. Apparently they exist, and it's kind of my job to locate one. Anyone have any pointers?

Bagpipe sound for guitar ?? AC/DC style

Tom Marello (Rage Against hte Machine, Audioslave) gets a bagpipe sound out of his Digitech Whammy by sustaining a note and playing with the interval knob. (See "Voice of the Voiceless, RATM).

Recording vocals in a room with constant background noise.

Ooooohhhh!! Pick me!! Put a matres in front of the computers (I've done that before), then drape blanket over top and staple to wall. This still gives the CPUs airspace for cooling, but cuts the noise. Plus, hey, a fort!

How do I set up my rig?

When dealing with a ridiculous number of FX, a bypass box is key. Or at least helpful. Johnny Greenwood from radiohead just uses the basic Boss Line selector, which can be used to power a number of 9v effects like a wall wart.

    Acoustic guitar recommendations

I will second the Seagull call on that one. I haven't played a Seagull I didn't like. Nice sounds, nice feel. And although many people are against them, there are some decent Takamine models under $1000. Now, OVER $1000, I would suggest Martin and Seagull.

looking to buy an acoustic amp I need opinions!

Well, it's not a true solution to your problem, but an option worth considering. If you already have a 2x10 or 2x12 cabinet, you can get a tweeter installed in the "ass-groove" between the speakers (at the top). Really brightens up the tone, and with a good amp to begin with, it's a great...

    *carvin Custom Guitars*

Funny, I was just checking out their site a few days ago. I had heard of them from a friend I met overseas who had graduated from the University of Winnipeg with a Jazz Guitar degree. He had played many of them and told me that they were extremely customizable. Well, holy shiz, he was right. SO...

    Seagull or Garrison Guitar

I've liked most guitar I've played by the Godin/Seagull/etc. people. I've played some sweet Seagulls in my day. Like them all. Never played a Garrison. But I can definitely vouch for the Seagulls--I think I might be getting one myself this summer. And, because I like to promote them, if you're...

    Which Martin?

I've seen a lot of Takamines that, under $800USD, beat the Martins of the same price. Above $1000, though, Martin > Tak. Ever tried a Seagull guitar? They're good sounding, and they feel good to me (might not to you). And some of them come with some wicked electrocoustic pickups.

    pickguards

Au contraire, I had some really badly wound pickups (rather, still HAVE them. . .) that were so microphonic that I could scream into the pickups and pretend I was playing with my teeth Hendrix-style. But that's a bad thing. GOOD pickups are not microphones. :o

    The fender/marshall/mesa sound?

Woah, this is SO different from my other forum folk (www.diystompboxes.com). There' it's all about obscure, hardly usable pedals that make funky sounds, and amp sims out the wazoo. There, the goal is to fill the stage floor with FX, so that when you play, it's more like Dance Dance Revolution...

    pickguards

You know that foil that comes in cigarette packs? You ever peeled it off and rubbed it onto something? It sticks well to hard surfaces. I did that to my pickguard--on teh seams it cracks and gets all funky. Kinda neat. Not really my thing since I quit that metal band, but for metal band...

    Want to record acoustic

I've had pretty good success combining a single mic and using a passive pickup. SOmeone mentioned that pickups are usually only for live applications--true, but it can be nice for narrowing dynamics and adding sound w/o so much clickiness. Strange tone, but gives an interesting effect. I used a...

    Build a Microphone Worth $3.00

I built two of these mics, hoping they'd be okay. They cost me about $30 USD each, but they weren't as good as I had hoped--really dull It might be a problem with my soldering or lack of skills, though. http://www.christianmusicweb.com/microphones/mic_project.html

    Cleaning up Vocals

Not sure if it's what you're talking about, but the first thing I always do is go through and reduce the volume levels on the breaths. (Sadly, I can now do this visually because I know what my inhaling "looks like," which is different from other vovalists that I've worked with. . .). It's best...

How do you keep your computer quiet?

DON'T FORGET INTERFERENCE FROM. . .oops, from a computer monitor! Mine is nasty. If you can distance/shield the mic from the screen/box, that could help too. Mine screws with my guitar's pickups--took me 3 years to figure out the soruce of that damn incessant humming! I now turn off my monitor...
