Drywall on the 'outside portions' of NEW structures? (as per Rick Fitz's STC chart)

The idea behind RockWool is that its much more dense than R11 or fiberglass insulation. Remember, you're trying to add mass and density to the entire wall section, and not just with the sheathing or drywall. Think of the wall section as one cohesive unit. You'll gain a little in thermal value...

Drywall on the 'outside portions' of NEW structures? (as per Rick Fitz's STC chart)

You've got a GREAT project going on there! Nice looking work so far. Is there any reason for NOT using RockWool in the wall cavaties? Other than economics? ;)

Drywall on the 'outside portions' of NEW structures? (as per Rick Fitz's STC chart)

OK, I looked at your pictures. In the first picture, what is on the other-side of the insulated wall? Is that an exterior wall? In my area, due to the local amendments to the UBC, ALL INTERIOR SIDES OF EXTERIOR WALLS MUST BE SHEETROCKED. I think I would rather sheath, drywall, ect, the inside...

Drywall on the 'outside portions' of NEW structures? (as per Rick Fitz's STC chart)

No. EC, that would be for interior double walls only. Like the wall between, say, the live room, and the control room. The outside, or exterior walls need to follow local building codes. In my case, what I built for exterior walls is a staggered stud wall, with 1/2" OSB, House wrap, 3/4" rigid...

A Nuendo/Cubase question about a slight sync problem......

I dunno. (Nuendo user here) Sounds like a clocking problem. Are you using the Nuendo 96/52 sound card?

I Need to control a problem "FREAK"

That was my understanding too. The 1/4 wave length is the distance from the wall (or other reflective surface) that you would want to position your treatment for effective absorbtion of that given frequency. But, I'm sure its not that easy.

Me too. :D I need to post an update at John's site showing how the A/C was all roughed-in, how the CR ceiling was framed, and a few other hurdles.

I just started sheetrocking this week. I hope to be in there before the end of the year.

    Different mic options for sax.

Yeah, piano is my main instrument, but I also play sax (alto) and clarinet. We're starting the sheetrocking in the new studio!

    Different mic options for sax.

Someone here made a really nice recording of sax using an MXL V67G. Its a large dia. condensor mic. I agree about the SM57; not something I would use for sax. Being a sax player myself, I do tend to like LD condensors, but the MD441 works nicely too - but that may be a bit out of your price...

    Garage Studio Design

Looks like pretty typical garage type framing. I think its a workable space. It appears that you have rafters and beams and not trusses for the interior roof/ceiling. Trusses are MUCH stronger than rafters. Trying to hang sheetrock on the beams that span below the rafters could pose a problem...

OK How high are your ceilings? Is there any attic space above it? Can you post some pictures of this space?

I was thinking something along these lines: (The "X" would be your Mechanical closet.)

Here you can see the blower unit and furnace fit neatly into that mechanical closet, but its the distribution manifold that takes the most space.

And here's a close up of the distribution manifold that's above the bathroom.

40 ft sq.? Do you mean 4'-0"? I just went out and measured the Mechanical closet in my studio. It's 3'-0" deep and 4'-6" wide. But we had to make extra space, above the bathroom, to handle the distribution manifold for the supply and return ducting. On the lower right hand side of this...

    Garage Studio Design

Yeah, that's a much better lay-out. Do you have any dimensions on that storage space? It takes a lot more room than you might think to house the HVAC.

Its not as much the numbers of doors you have to go through as it is having 2 exists to the outside. Again, check with your local fire code official. For the bathroom, it hould probably be easier to do new construction for that. That way, all the plumbing can be run by trenching the earth...

One or two layers of fiberglass insulated walls?

Yeah, I think you're right. "Knightfly" understands the differences between STC and MTC much better than I do. Maybe he'll chime in on this.

One or two layers of fiberglass insulated walls?

OK, someone will correct me if I'm wrong on this, but I think, in it simplest definition, an STC rating of 60, will effectively provide a reduction of 60dB. So if your playing something at 80dB, you'll hear 20 of it. 20dB is akin to someone speaking very softly.
