    Melodies

Hey, I said it was a painful method. :D Coming up with melodies wasn't why I did those drives. (There were several of those drives, actually.) This was back at a time when I couldn't afford more than the most basic Geo Metro and I had to get to internships in Chicago. I couldn't afford to...

we want a record deal.. so does everyone

Hey, Sludge. Yeah, the most I learned about music industry economics was from Deadbolt. For a while they were making $2 per CD, then after they joined ASCAP it dropped to $1. They do their own promotions, bookings, paying for the producer, name it. I never did get around to asking what they...

I sing like a dying pig in the heat of a miscarriage, HELP ME!!!

Sigh. Musical instruction doesn't necessarily mean you'll sound like you were cut from a cookie-cutter. I've heard lots of earnest and emotional singing that made me long for fingernails on a blackboard instead. Hang out at a karaoke bar long enough and you'll eventually hear the guy or gal...

    Melodies

I guarantee this method will give you a bunch of melodies, some of them original and good too. It's painful though. Go on a long drive (something on the magnitude of San Francisco to Chicago) all by yourself in a car with no radio, CD player, or tape deck, with at most 4 hours sleep per day...

    COLLABORATIVE LYRIC-WRITING ACROSS THE WEB

Nah, I can't take credit for it. I just heard it while one drunk friend was giving advice to another drunk friend. :D

    44.1kHz, 48kHz, and 96kHz?

Sonusman, do you have any references that explain how the high frequencies that we can't hear affect the lower frequencies that we do hear? I checked out www.digido.com for an answer (primarily for the 96 KHz sampling vs. lesser rates question) but came away with distortion being spread over...

I sing like a dying pig in the heat of a miscarriage, HELP ME!!!

Oh yeah, another thing if you can't afford private lessons just yet. Check to see if you have a local community college that offers voice classes. Sometimes they're at night and sometimes they're very cheap too.

we want a record deal.. so does everyone

Buck's right. I had a friend who joined a band over 10 years ago as a drummer. He had no sense of rhythm, his drums were always out of tune, and he always sang off key--if you could call it singing. The lead singer/guitarist couldn't sing either, he just recited lyrics in a menacing voice...

Oh yeah, I have Roger Love's book too and have been working from it for about 2 months now. Great book.

    COLLABORATIVE LYRIC-WRITING ACROSS THE WEB

"She took some other guy's dick and stabbed it through your heart." Oh wait, it doesn't fit the meter. Never mind. :D

Hm, sounds like me before I took any voice classes. I'd say get someone to help coach or teach you effective breathing, volume, etc. I still have some problems (meaning, I still suck) which is why I start private vocal lessons today. :D

    Good songwriter anomalies

So I admitted that I suck at writing lyrics and it appears that I'm not alone here. To try to make myself feel better I was trying to think of examples of crappy lyrics from normally good songwriters. I couldn't think of any. Shows you how much I suck if I can't even identify crap lyrics. Blah.

    BIAB vs. Jammer Pro

I've been using Jammer Pro v4 for the last 9 months to help sketch out some of my arrangements. Some drum or bass tracks come out good enough for me that I keep them almost verbatim. I've never used Band in a Box, but it looks like v9 has just come out. I've been debating whether to get the...

    COLLABORATIVE LYRIC-WRITING ACROSS THE WEB

Oh my. After how quite a few of us have admitted that we suck at lyric writing, you want some lines from us? This should be fun. :D

    drum tracks without a drummer?

Lately I've been using drum tracks from Jammer Pro to trigger drum samples in Gigasampler. I'm mostly happy with the results, though there's occasionally something that reveals the machine.

    Recording with a plan?

This has been my M.O. lately: 1. An idea for a vocal melody comes to me while I'm doing something else. I don't force it, it just happens though not as frequently as I would like it. 2. If the melody passes my 2-day test, meaning that my mind still likes it enough to remember for 2-days after...

Mic for nasally and breathy baritone?

And sometimes whiny sounding too? Is there a mic under $500 that de-emphasizes these characteristics? --Ron
