Clearsonic Sorbers OK for temporary recording booth?

From their description of them it seems that they are one and a half inch fiberglass (likely 705) covered in fabric. As such they should work, but there is nothing likely magical about them compared to absorbers you could build yourself. While they alone might be good enough for deadening a...

    Acoustic panel questions

rockwool and fiberglass have nearly identical accoustic properties at similar densities. The key is the density. You want something porus enough to let the sound in but not so airly to do nothing to break up the sound waves. The stuff that you are talking about, home thermal insulation, is...

    First design for basement studio

I would enclose the columns in a wall, have a larger control room in the upper right area and a soundlock/booth in front of the bathroom so you didn't have to work with expensive to soundproof sliding doors. Then you have a large symmetrical space genuinely suitable for a theatre room and I...

My Ribbon Manifesto for Noobs like me

I too made a ribbon my second microphone purchase and I was pleased at how different it was. I suspect that a second condenser would have left me wondering why I had spent the money. I think that the best recommendation would be that your first three microphone purchases should reflect...

    stereo micing bars

next we should see some cheapie stereo bar manufacturer saying that their $15 bar sounds exactly like the $615 stereo bar and then a gear snob will say that to get the really pro sound nothing less than the $615 stereo bar will do. And then heaven help us when some newbie innocently asks what's...

Things you wish you had thought of

Decide up front what your expectations are going to be for isolation and build accordingly top to bottom. You can always fine tune the internal accoustics of the room with absorbers but isolation is a different matter, and isolation is a no better than the weakest link thing.

Need suggestions on setting up signal chain.

Sorry, but the compressor is already owned by the station. The only question I am facing is how to get it into the signal chain. I realized that I made an error in my original post. The board is a Yamaha, not a Panasonic. Here is an image of the outputs section of the back panel

Need suggestions on setting up signal chain.

Small mono radio station running off of a Panasonic MG24/14fx Current outputs from the board are connected as follows. Mono Out->Main Transmitter Stereo Out->MD Decks. ST Sub Out->Logging System (computer that records everything broadcast) Group 2 Out->Codec to repeater transmitter. Rec...

    Quick 703 Question

No you don't need a backing in order to have them be absorbers. Remember that absorbtion is not isolation. If you think that these panels are going to keep your neighbors from hearing you or you from hearing the helicopter outside then you are following the wrong path entirely. Absorbers are...

Looking for ways to quiet pc noise

The basic rule of quiet computing. Large fans moving slowly make less noise than small fans moving fast to move the same volume of air.

    Quick Tip for cheapos

Cheapo? I went to ebay and found that lighting stands were from forty to eighty dollars each, plus shipping of course. The last time I bought a bale of 703 (enough for six four-inch absorbers) is was somewhere around $160. So even if the carpet is free it is no doubt costing you more than...

    Burlap!!!!

My favorite material for making absorbers is the polyester felt available at fabric stores such as Joannes. Many colors and cheap.

    How to soundproof windows

typical double-pane windows, which consist of two thin sheets of glass separated by a narrow air space, are not designed for effective sound control but heat loss. Now, the first question is whether you still want light to come through the window and to be able to see out.. If not, then build...

A reasonably priced diffusor for home studios.

The web site describes them as being made from recycled paper so I am guessing that they are kind of a dense cardboard. They also say that they are stackable for shipping so I am presuming that they are hollow. I would guess that there would be nothing stopping you from prior to installing...

A reasonably priced diffusor for home studios.

Diffusion is not so easily measured and documented as absorbtion. Go to Auralex's web site and see if you can find any test reports on their diffusors. I couldn't.

Live audience recording / shotgun mics

not a good idea then, the shotgun will pick up whatever small part of the audience that it is pointed straight at. One jerk heckling there and your recording is a mess. Moreover a shotgun has a zone of sensitivity directly behind it that will pick up the band rather strongly. Depending on...

A reasonably priced diffusor for home studios.

I think he didn't realize that the 30 bucks was for a package of 12. As for the small flat areas I don't think that it is quite necessary to cover ever every square inch, just as with absorbtion.

A reasonably priced diffusor for home studios.

Remember, we are not talking about this being for soundproofing or absorbtion but diffusion. What matters most in diffusion is the shape. Since these are being manufactured exclusively for wall covering I am hoping that they have had some fire-resistant chemicals or fibers mixed in. Dense...

A reasonably priced diffusor for home studios.

I stumbled across these on the web today and judging from the shape they look like they would do a reasonabley good job. And at 30 bucks for 12 square feet they would be a good deal compared with MF charging nearly sixty for a four square foot Auralex T-Fusor...
