It sounds like you have your sends and returns cabled correctly.
Press the SEND button for the tracks you wish to send thru your effects modules (e.g. your tracks 3 and 4).
When you hit the SEND button, you have three sections: LOOP, EFF1 and EFF2. EFF1 and EFF2 are used for external sends...
I don't think you can dump to CD without mixing and mastering. LiveWriter mode is for splitting a single large recording into individual tracks.
If your friend is using a computer DAW, you can export tracks as .wav files to CD or via USB straight to a computer.
Comping is a bit more tedious than using a computer. You have to set IN and OUT points, then use the track editing functions to copy and paste. It's not really all that difficult, just involves a bit more clicking/button pressing. I comp vox all the time; it gets easier the more you do it...
I'm not a huge fan of the onboard effects myself, but they work in a pinch. The guitar multieffects have come in very useful when doing late night recording and I don't want to wake the neighbors!
I would also have like to have manual knobs for panning and EQ, but that would probably have made...
Product: DP-24 | TASCAM
Looks sleek. I'm note getting rid of my 2488neo for it, but I like that it has color at last. No real knobs for pan and the like, but the digital controls aren't so bad.
Wonder if it has .wav output and all.
Change the pre-roll time on the recorder preferences menu.
Hit MENU then select PREFERENCES. Choose recorder preferences, then edit the pre-roll and post-roll times to your liking.
I've seen cheaper Lexicon units like the MPX100 go for between $40 and $75 on eBay.
It's a 1U rack unit...not sure if that's too bulky?
EDIT: Also, have you heard of the Alesis Picoverb? Not sure how good it is, but it seems to sell for around $40 used.
I have an Audio Buddy as a backup. I found that it clips very easily, even with a dynamic mic, and I have to set the gain very low.
If you do get a usable level from it, it's a fairly clean pre. I like my ART MPA Gold better, but I'm not above using the Audio Buddy if I'm in a pinch.
I enjoy the ART MPA Gold, which can be found for around $200 on eBay. The newer MPA II goes for around $275 new. They're both two channel tube preamps that offer a wide variety of tone via a HP filter, variable input impedance, and high and low tube voltage options. I've really fallen in...
I also enjoyed Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio by Mike Senior. Great explanations and a very well-organized book.
I've also read Guerilla Home Recording and enjoyed it a lot. The Owsinski books are supposed to be great; I read his blogs regularly and based on that, I'd say those books are...
I bought one used a few months ago and really like it so far. I wish panning was handled via analog-style pots rather than via a menu screen and I'm not excited by the onboard effects, but it's a solid unit. Eight inputs, two effect sends, MIDI sync capability, a mixdown/"mastering" stage, and...
I like my 2488neo a whole lot. Actually got it after my last computer went belly-up and I was fed up dealing with HD crashes, latency, upgrades, etc. I know the Tascam is an HD unit and thus just as vulnerable to a crash, I don't have all the other computer-related headaches when using it (at...
Yeah, something's up either with your headphone connection or the jack on your 2488. Do your headphones work fine on anything else they're connected to?
The Neo's headphone jack is stereo.
Just adding to the 2488neo love. I got mine a couple of months ago, and I love it. I'm still learning my way around making quality recordings, but I know it's capable of producing some great mixes; the last band I was in did all their recording on a Neo (the drummer is a big-time audio guy so...
It is thru the submixer section. Check page 58 of the manual (fyi, the TASCAM site has the manual available for download with clickable links from the table of contents...very useful!).
Checked the TASCAM user forums after answering you in the the Recording forum, and you do, indeed, have to bounce the track w/effect in order to free up the multi-effect for use on another track. You can still keep the original, un-effected track if you want to change it later.
A little...
