Parallel Compression: How is it done and is it useful?

I've seen this term pop up several times and I have never really looked into it. If anyone could provide me with a relatively thorough answer on how to do it and what its pros and cons are that would be awesome. Thanks!

    Tool Bass Tone - Vicarious

I took another listen and, although I can't describe it well in words, I am near positive I am right regarding the last thing I wrote about the whammy. You can hear it on the higher accented notes it gets that sort of worbling pulsating sound (the octave jumping up). I've used a whammy pedal...

    Tool Bass Tone - Vicarious

If you listen to Tool or know anything about his style, he uses plenty of effects, and the Whammy is extremely common for him to use. I merely suggested it because he tends to use it alot, and it is very likely that on the accented notes he is using the pedal set to an octave up.

    Tool Bass Tone - Vicarious

I'm pretty sure there are no effects on that. His tone is just extremely bright with a bit of a mid scoop. You probably just want to have strings that have an extremely bright tone, and you could also raise the treble too. Also, he picks his bass. There is a slight possibility he might be using...

Direct In Recording Vs Amplifier (for bass)

Thanks guys. I will definitely try the blend of DI and Miked sounds. The "tinny" effect seems to be the issue I was having that I couldn't quite put to words. Glad you guys could actually understand my problem. Thanks again!

Direct In Recording Vs Amplifier (for bass)

I will try to word this to make sense so here it goes: I was doing some recording this weekend, and I had never used my distortion pedal with my bass while recording DI before. I have a Fulltone Bass Drive, and what I noticed in the recording is that with the pedal off, the bass tone clean...

    Kick Drum Mic(s) Advice

For those of you using the D6, have you ever paired with another microphone as a kick in/out mic set up and noticed anything you liked or didn't like? Or have you only used it by itself?

    Kick Drum Mic(s) Advice

I have been doing some recording for a while now and I am still trying to find that perfect kick drum microphone. Obviously there is personal preferences, but so far I have used a D112 and an RE20 more than once and have had pretty good results. However, I was just wondering if anyone else had a...

    FireWire/USB Interface Question

I am running a Sony Vaio, Windows 7 64 bit with Nvidia graphics. I am looking into buying a new audio interface since Pro Tools 9 came out, and I notice that many of the interfaces are firewire out. My computer does not have a firewire input, so does anyone know if using a firewire to usb cable...

    Best Microphones For Recording Gutars

Honestly, I don't really care about a budget right now. I am just researching at this point so I am open to any kind of suggestions. If people feel like making categories of good cheap mics and good expensive mics , I am cool with that. Really though, just whatever.

    Best Microphones For Recording Gutars

I have used Sm57s and Audix i5 on guitar cabinets before and although they do the job, I am wondering if anyone has any "go to" mics, dynamic or not, that they use for guitar cabinets for loud rock/metal and the like. Thanks

ReAmping.....What is it and How do you do it/What are it's practical uses?

I have heard this term tossed around before and although I have done a fair amount of recording I have never been able to learn what ReAmping actually is/does. If someone could just give me a quick rundown on what it really entails and its practical uses, that would be awesome. Thanks!

    Wall of Sound Recording

I am looking for some tips on how to get a "Wall of Sound" sound on my recordings. Not the loudness and volume we hear in the many recordings today that are just over-compressed, but just a true punch you in the face sound i.e. Devin Townsend/Strapping Young Lad, Carcass's "Heartwork", Neurosis...

    Big Bass/Oscillator Effect

Hello, I have been trying to figure out how to do this trick, so if anyone can let me know how to do this please help. Listen to the links below, and you will hear that on certain downbeat hits there is a huge bass hit/hum that sounds like a 50 -60 Hz tone that kicks in with everything else. I...
