    Source for 7" metal reel?

My one and only plastic 7" take up reel is warped, so I often use a 10.5" metal reel for takeup. This is a pain, though, flipping a pre-recorded tape over. Is there a source for new 7" metal reels? They are way too expensive for me on eBay. Thanks, jv

DX-4D repair, adjustments ??? (those three trimmers...)

Yes, assuming it's a bipolar transistor, the common failure mode is shorted, collector to emitter, sometimes the base is shorted with them.

DX-4D repair, adjustments ??? (those three trimmers...)

Well, that's so if the transistor is being used as a switch; it can also be operated in its active region, and used as a buffer or an amp or a filter, or part of a larger circuit that fulfills a similar function.

So, this guy walks into a butcher store and asks "how much are your pork chops?" "Seven ninety-nine a pound" replies the butcher. "$7.99! The butcher across the street sells them for $3.99!" says the customer. "So, why do't you go across the street and buy them there?" asks the butcher...

    Ampex MM-1000 Story...

Yes, I related in a previous post how we used to burn out shorts in the lab - but it's a last resort, and sometimes destructive. Try the low wattage bulb.

Manual for Teac Model 2A Mixer and MB-20 Meter Bridge?

Excellent, thank you! Anyone for the mixer manual? :) It is my intention, once I get these manuals, to upload them to hifiengine.com, so everyone will have access to them for free. jv

    Ampex MM-1000 Story...

I'm sorry I didn't get the time to dig into this more, but I think that if you are to solve the plate voltage issue, you'll have to take bold action: either put a light bulb across it and see if there's enough current to make it glow; or "burn out the short" with a high current power supply...

Pre-recorded music reels: how good ? Your opinion please !

A well written and interesting eBay Guide to prerec. open reel http://reviews.ebay.com/Open-Reel-Pre-recorded-Tapes-Totally-Worth-It_W0QQugidZ10000000007178627 My only regret in sharing this is that I may create another competitor for old tapes on eBay. :)

Pre-recorded music reels: how good ? Your opinion please !

My experience... I'm new to this, and bought some "random" titles at a local vintage vinyl shop (3 for $5.00!). My deck is freshly "calibrated," tuned-up by a pro shop. These tapes sound great! I think you'd need a fairly expensive turntable and LPs in superb condition to rival the quality...

How "aggressive" should reel brakes act?

Agreed it's just a bit annoying. But, better than breaking tapes.

How "aggressive" should reel brakes act?

Thanks! I don't like the tape end flailing, though. Any harm in tightening 'em up a bit?

If this is a standard 17" wide, 1U high rack unit, then you can get ears ver cheaply. What size is it?

How "aggressive" should reel brakes act?

I have a newly acquired, first-for-me Teac A-3440 tape deck that has "been through the shop." The brakes were supposedly adjusted. With the machine stopped, they grab more in one direction than the other, when turing the reels by hand, which one would expect, since they are "single leading...

    Small Run of Vinyl

Vinyl cutter, plus pressing price point. First, the price point: 500 7" records for $1500. Vinyl cutting. For very small quantities, you can get a "dub cut," or dub plate made for about $40 each. Do the math! :) Once you get up around 30 or 40 disks, it makes sense to have a plate made and...

    1/4" half-track TEAC RTR at both 7.5ips and 3.75ips?

Do you know if a Teac 3440 can be made to run at 3 3/4 ips? I have a couple of prerecorded tapes at that speed I'd like to listen to. Thanks, jv
