Running 100V gear on 120V outlet

I deal with a lot of ultra precision semiconductor mfg and test equipment. The Japanese equipment is designed for 100V or 200V. We have no issues running them on 110/120 and 208 respectively. Again, I do not see the voltage being the issue. We DO use line power conditioners on the sensitive...

Running 100V gear on 120V outlet

Must be a domestic Japanese unit. They are the only ones using 100V. Typically, theses electronics are rated for 100-120V. Running on the hi side should not cause it to generate any odd hum. Is it like a 60 hz power line hum?

"What am I gonna do with all this crap?" -- Tales of a Recovering Gear-A-Holic

So my case is: >> Space wise I have all my gear and media in one large room (studio space) even though that includes two closets full of "extra" stuff. >> Money wise, I have bought well and fixed and sold enough extra gear to more than cover the cost of what I kept >> I use the gear...

"What am I gonna do with all this crap?" -- Tales of a Recovering Gear-A-Holic

While I am no where as "ambitious" as Cory, I am also more enamoured with gear than I am either talented or motivated. I fortunately (unfortunately) have a very large home with a very large garage and shop which means I have never had space be a limit to my obsession with gear. Within the last...

    Hope I don't regret this...

Can't trust the 2" square lo res picture you get on Craigslist. It was only a 30 minute drive across town, so I had nothing to lose by checking it out. For the price I wont lose anything if I have to part it out. I havent dug into the electronics yet, except to take off the top covers and scope...

    Hope I don't regret this...

The servo box is undamaged and complete (I have the card pulled out in that picture) but the motor did not turn in my storage unit test. I have not tried it now that its at the house. I need to clean up all the connectors and check continuity. Yes, that is a broken lock tab stuck in the...

    Hope I don't regret this...

Ok...Pix The right hand reel adaptor is frozen to the takeup shaft. I am trying some penetrating oil, but might have to surgically remove it with my dremel tool. I have a spare tension arm and capstan cap, so I wont even mess with those.....just replace The rusty belly pan looks like it had...

    Hope I don't regret this...

The select switches on the 440C are pushbuttons that mechanically change color when they are pushed in. I think schadow is the brand (??). On the 440C they are either red or green when pushed in, and black when not. There is a little set of shutters that cover the color when the switch is "off"...

    Hope I don't regret this...

Long story short: saw a newly posted local Craigslist for an Ampex 440C Half inch 4 track. $350. Guy is moving out of town the next day (red flag # 1) and last minute decides he doesnt want to haul it across the country. He claims low usage. (red flag #2) So I go to the storage unit its in (red...

Tascam serial numbers...anybody know anything about them?

Since no one else has replied, i may chime in... ....SERIAL number, i.e. SEQUENCE number. Unless other evidence refutes, I would presume lower numbers are older units. I am not aware of any date coding in Tascam serial numbers. Not too much you can do with six digits on high production...

Question on the DIY tape echo

I think he is actually using only ONE playback head. Sounds like he said the original is a combo record playback. No magic here. My old Sony TC630 three head machine had a nice on board echo function...built in. Its basically creating a decaying feedback loop, where the playback signal is fed...

LOL at the new tascam 38 I got...

File with Paypal IMMEDIATELY!!!! Include the info on 7 day money back and the info on damage due to poor packing. I have had very good luck with Paypal (and very BAD luck with UPS) refunding money. I even had one machine advertised as fully functional come in non-working....the seller did not...

My TEAC's very first component failure!

Good job!!! Its nice and gratifying to be able to repair your own gear. In this day and age, its actually nice to be able to repair ANYTHING, since if this was a new-ish piece of equiment, it would probably nave been made with some moulded in place non-standard impossible to access piece of s***...

    Tascam 122

I just did the capstan belt on a tascam 112. Maybe a 2-3 hour job. Had to gut the thing be able to get the new belt on. I can see why it costs a fortune to get these repaired by a shop tech.

    388/fuse question

What he meant to say was..... Fuses are cheap....replace them all since it is not always entirely obvious when one is blown. Next step is marking sure all internal cards are seated and plugs are in. Is it just the transport with no power? How do you know it has no power?
