I can't wait to get the whole thing working. I did have it set up wrong for sync though. Focusrite tech support got back to me in two days via email and set me straight: I was trying to clock from the RME to the Octopre (RME as master) via the ADAT optical, but I noticed LED's on the RME...
Bought the Octopre with ADAT option on EBAY for $560. That combo goes for $1000 new. Really nice sound with variable compression on each channel. Not sure I am syncing right with the RME host though.
The attractive thing about the 8-pre is that it can be a host as well as an expansion. Also that I can just walk into GC and buy one. I am also looking at the Octopre by Focusrite.
I'm game. That's a really nice track, Harvey. Arrangement, performance, mix. I'd love to get your info.
BTW, I assume that the slideshow pics were taken in your studio, no?
It reminds me I need to make more bass traps. :)
I'm running all analog signals into a Mackie 32x8 Buss mixer. Out of the board's direct outs into the Fireface channels 1-10 as it has 10 analog channels. When I get my new 8-channel, I will do the same and piggy back that into the RME, so I'll have 18 analog ins. Then into the PC via firewire...
I'm looking for an 8-channel pre to connect to my RME Fireface 800. The Mackie Onyx 800R is a bit more expensive than the Motu 8 Pre. Not sure of quality or other options. I'd like to get opinions.
I bought my Fireface 800 from these guys,

but indirectly via Ebay, brand new in the box for several hundred dollars less than they list on the website. My first reaction is that compatibility-wise, the thing is a no-brainer. RME's firewire technology is superior to...
I am currently on the "bad" computer right now. I have swapped out the PS with one from an even older PC and it is definitely staying on longer than it did. Fingers crossed.
I don't think it's overheating. I took the side panel off and never put it back on. CPU fan is blowing as is power supply fan. Clock is keeping time so I don't think it's the MOBO battery. Unfortunately, I am leaning toward the bad sector scenario. I don't suspect reloading Windows will help this.
I am retiring my old DAW, but when I last used it for recording it was still viable. For some reason now, when I use it for day to day use, it will reboot itself for no apparent reason. It is a 1GHZ P3 running Windows XP. I have 3 sticks of RAM (pc133). Two of them are 128mb, one is 256. I have...
Here's video with my audio from the Fireface. Don't know if Youtube did anything to that with the compression, but most people will listen on computer speakers anyway....

Well, wow. I got some nice tracks on Saturday. I will have a few posted soon. The unit was flawless. I ran 11 tracks. 10 analog, one SPDIF (using my J-Station as an A to D converter). I used a year old laptop PC with Sonar and a 200GB USB2 LaCie HD. Some of the levels off the mixer to the...
The only unit with comparable features was the Firestudio at about half the price. I was hoping the price difference would be justified by compatibility and robustness. I'll post more after I use it this weekend.
Gawd, you guys are lame! :D
Well I got so intimidated by trying MOTU on a PC with no manual that I returned it. I'm getting an RME Fireface 800.
YEAH!!
I just bought a floor model of a MOTU 828 mkii from Guitar Center. I tried to negotiate $20 off from them due to the fact that it has no manual. The MOTU website charges $20 for these. Anyone got a pdf? I'll even take scanned pages just to get started. I plan to order one but I'd like to get...
I used XP and the spdif cable (a coax one). I believe from the spdif out of what software recognizes as card one to the spdif in of card two. Definitely worth a shot.
