I just put a Duncan humbucker in my strat last week. Awesome mod IMO. As Mixsit said, if you want to keep your options open, you can wire it so that you can split it can run it as a humbucher or single coil. EMG's are cool too, but going to active pickups is a more involved mod.

Laney amps are good enough for Opeth so I don't think the amp is the problem, and if you can't get a descent distortion out of a GT-6 then you are doing something wrong. Personally, I have never found an amp distortion that I like for heavy tones, so put the amp on clean and just use the GT-6...
