Humbucker or SIngle Coil for Strat

I just put a Duncan humbucker in my strat last week. Awesome mod IMO. As Mixsit said, if you want to keep your options open, you can wire it so that you can split it can run it as a humbucher or single coil. EMG's are cool too, but going to active pickups is a more involved mod.

    Heavier Tone

Laney amps are good enough for Opeth so I don't think the amp is the problem, and if you can't get a descent distortion out of a GT-6 then you are doing something wrong. Personally, I have never found an amp distortion that I like for heavy tones, so put the amp on clean and just use the GT-6...

    The enemy I see....Is me!

I generally cringe when I see "highschool band" (I remember my own <shudder>), but you guys are pretty good. Hand on to that singer, she's pretty good and good female vocalists are tough to find in my experience.

Instrument sync. at beginning of song

Are you recording live drums or a drum machine? With a drum machine I use Dogman's method. Just put 4 or 8 snare hits or something at the start to count everything else in and remove them later. If I am working with live drums I will record a click track for the whole duration of the song...

    Metal (Death Metal) Guitars...Help!!!

Like I said, it might be worth a try because you never know what will work, but given the sound he wants, I just don't think it will be the solution. Death metal guitars have to be tight to pull off the desired effect. I could see using a room mic to get a more atmospheric blsck metal sound...

    Metal (Death Metal) Guitars...Help!!!

Because everytime I have tried using a distant mic to record anything that is the result. I usually only ever setup a distant mic for drums, so guitar might get different results, but I can't think of any reason why it would be different. I suppose the room itself will make a big difference in...

    Pulling knobs on a strat

Wow, negative rep for replacing a pickup, that's pretty weak. Perhaps whoever is doling out the criticism who like to come forward and give me some tips on getting the tone I am looking for out of the stock single coils instead of offering a "punch in the cock".

    Metal (Death Metal) Guitars...Help!!!

I don't think it is too bad. I would venture a guess that the only way you are going to see a big improvement is to get higher end gear. You say you are running a bunch of Behringer stuff. Behringer might be ok for messing around at home demoing stuff but it you are serious I would think...

    effect pedals??,,,,,boss??

I've played with a couple of Sans Amp pedals that were pretty interesting. There was a distortion pedal that was particularly nice. Come to think of it I never tried it with a guitar. Made some cool tones with a bass and a keyboard though. My buddy got a damn fine deal on it, but if you get...

    Pulling knobs on a strat

Right you are. hehe. Oh well, now I know I can slip the knobs off if I ever need to. Minus one stock single coil, plus one Duncan humbucker. Seems like a nice upgrade so far by my short evaluation time. And I must say, my soldering skills are top notch :p Now I just have to wonder why...

    $225K+ Martin

Wow, 95 bids, US$220k, and still reserve not met! Make the PRS Custom 24 I want so bad seem cheap.

    simple pickup question

Are they single coil pickups or humbuckers? Single coils are always a bit noisey. I just put a Seymour Duncan in my Strat and it has helped a bunch it terms of noise and tone. That said, if your guitar was $99 with an amp I wouldn't spend a dime on upgrading it. There is no sense putting a...

    Pulling knobs on a strat

Thanks guys. There are no set screws or anything, Zaphod, but I didn't know how well they are glued on.

    Pulling knobs on a strat

Not really a recording question, but I figured someone here would be able to help. I am replacing a pickup on my strat and I was wondering what the best way is to pull the knobs, without damaging them or the tapers, so that I can remove the pick guard and get at the goodies inside. Thanks for...

    Drum Samples

Hmm...I'm not sure if this is the right forum or if I am asking to be crucified by posting this question here but here goes. Are there any descent sources of good sounding free drum samples online? I live in a tiny condo and cannot record live drums so I am stuck with programmed drums. It...

    Input issues

Hey folks. I'm totally new to Cubase and I am having very strange problems with my inputs. I am just running in through the integrated sound card for now (which sucks in itself). There is a mic port on the front of the case and one on the back. For some reason last night the front port...
