    compressor suggestions?

No, you can't... You can't put a compressor in front of the mixer. Either you need to put the compressor in an insert on the mixer (allowing the signal to pass through the preamp first) or apply compression in the box. Personally, for $200, I wouldn't bother with a hardware compressor as...

    buying a good snare

Got a 64 Suprophonic... love it. Get one used... they are a great work horse. I also have a Starclassic Maple snare that is use for heavy back beat live stuff, but the Supraphoic is a great all arounder.

Outdoors Event- What Mics To Use?

What about a plain old ordinary14th row of a Phish concert boot leg rig? A couple SDCs (spend the $10 on wind screens... otherwise be ready for all sort of rumbly crap) on a stereo bar in an XY to a 2 track DAT or the like?

    trombone recording... pop filter?

If it makes you feel any better, under all of those *&^#%*&^#$^ it simply says 'bugger". Seriously, digging up every old brass thread and putting a plug for your website sure looks fishy and spamish.

    trombone recording... pop filter?

I am a dope.... Mr NewYorkBrass was just replying to every brass related post to steer traffic to his site. Sigh... I fell for it. ^#*&^#*& off spammer.

    trombone recording... pop filter?

Uh huh... Yeah, and placement, the room and the mic having little to do with it.... It is clearly impossible to record brass with a dynamic mic too.

    mic for Brass instrument

Brass is easy.... get an SM57 or equivalent and call it a day. And yeah, clip on is only for live situations.

No love for the ACM 3?

I had sagging and stretched out ribbons in both of mine... so they are pretty much on the junk heap until replacement ribbons arrive.

    C 414 substitute.

I use 4050s for drum over heads all the time. I find 414s to be a little, I dunno, shallow sounding... (Great quantifier there.) Here are a few tracks I did with 4050s as drum overheads. http://warsaw.innova-partners.com/~cburke/TheSlang/FinalMixes/WhyProblemMix.mp3...

    at4040

Th eonly reason I would tell you to look at the 4050 is the flexibility factor... I use a pair for all sorts of stuff... M/S, omni room mics, spaced drum over heads in cardioid.... 4050s are the best bang for the buck work horse out there IMO.

    Technicians vs. Minimalists

Play according to what the tune requires. That is all there is too it... some stuff requires a bunch of buggada buggadas, some things are four on the floor. Skill allows you to confidently execute what your taste dictates.

    How would you mic this?

What has been said... XY, ORTF, spaced omnis, or even M/S. It all just depends on what gear you have on hand and choosing a stereo technique based on what you want to get out of it.

LP claw mic mounts...worth the money?

I have had decent results with the Claw... but the alternative I have preferred is Gibralter's Claw knock off. Again, cheaper and I think better built. Check it out: http://www.gibraltarhardware.com/index.cfm?fa=partsmain&curcat=2&bnd=11&cid=115&sid=437&pid=1472

    Head/tuning change

I have some Pinstripes laying around... I'll give em a go. Haven't touched them in years... Clear G2s were my first thought so if PS don't work, I'll try them (or Emperor clears). I tried the Evans EC2 coated and it was the same problem as single ply coated... perhaps I just want more high end...

    Head/tuning change

I have a Star Classic Maple kit and for years I have played basic rock and jazz... some country with them. I have always used plain old coated single ply heads and they sound great... However, I have a new project now which is much more tom heavy (lots of ride patterns on the toms... very prog...

What Am I Missing for Large D Dynamics?

The.... buzz.... words.... are... too.... powerful..... And if you are really THAT much of a tone freak... um, dial in your amp to sound as you want and get an omni SDC like an Earthworks... super accurate with next to no coloration. As close to real life as you are ever going to get. Dynamics...

What Am I Missing for Large D Dynamics?

Did you miss this entire section of the post you are quoting? It is like saying you will only use copper to transmit data as fiber optics are bad... Huh? It is all in how it is designed and used... not in the material itself. I don't know why ND is even part of the discussion. What do you...

    Drum Overhead suggestions...

The SP C4 is a heck of a deal as it comes in a stereo pair and has interchangeable capsules. In that price range they are hard to beat. As for the Naint's... I do love those little mics. However, I found the MSH1s to break up at high SPLs. I haven't messed with the new MSH mics yet... so take...
