Where do you get your best song ideas

I write best when I'm dog ass tired. Like after a real long day or after I've been away on a business trip or sick as a dog. Something about digging deep for it makes it better.

    Shure sm58, good deal?

Get it. They go for 65-100 bucks on ebay all the time. More towards 100 too.

    Is This Mix Closer????

Great image there eri. How did you pull that off? I'm not real familar with what a de-esser is. Can anyone enlighten me? I'll try heavy comp too and see where it goes. Although since I've been criticized for using too much comp, I've been trigger shy with it.

    Where to go from here...

Maybe work on making it less synthetic sounding. You could be going for that. The drum beat and keys give off a synthic nature. You might want that though.

    Weekend Rain

Great quality. The background beat is kinda off and drops off too suddenly. Maybe fade that in and out. Lyrics are cool, spacy and hip. The acoustic guitars seem to be captured well. Same with vocals. Riff panned hard right is crisp. Give that picking guitar (panned left) more action...

    Waltz+Hard Rock=???

Great lead guitar work. I think the song could benefit from some acoustic guitar. Just me. There's some latency issues in there too. Was this done on tape? I'd use a different distortion on the electric guitar parts too. It's really scratchy sounding. Vocals - I totally understand the...

    Is This Mix Closer????

I was kind afraid of this. I used a MXL 1000 condensor with pop filter too. The vocal style I used for this song though was such that I crept up real close to the mic. The s,t and f's are relics of that proximity. I'm unsure of how to solve this problem. A Thanks to everybody who's...

president in the car, dead hooker in the trunk

Hey fax thanks for your listen to my song. Very chill song. Sensual sounds. That riffing guitar needs some work. It peaks out in several locations, so you proabbly need to bring the volume down on it. I touch it up with some reverb and eq or even some amp simulation/overdrive. Cool solo...

A second song for you benign souls

Yeah, I think the drum beat is the wrong beat for this song. You can tell, cause it sounds like you're having a hard time keeping beat with the drum track. The vocals have potential I think. You need to keep retracking. Keep recording this song. But I'd start again, with a fresh drum track...

    Newbie recording....suggestions welcome

I listened to track 1 The drums need work. Different mic or mic arangement. It's off beat in some places too. I'd touch up the guitar with some verb too. It sounds like a basement. Vocals would always be nice, but have intstrumentals too. Good work. Keep mixin'. A

    Is This Mix Closer????

I've retracked and remixed with my average at best talents. Here's the stage 2 product. Feel free to rip to shreds. "The Harbor Of Lights" http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=2340&alid=-1 Here's a link to the posts from the first thread...

    Talking vocals sorta

I've been trying without avail to get the right type of vocal sound with one of my songs. I think the technique I'm using is off. It's the type of vocal that's almost like talking, but really singing. I think Shaun Mullins does this type of vocal quite a bit. The best thing I've found is...

    recording elec guitar with dig.delay

Well said my man. I use delay quite a bit on my guitar bits. I find it easier to just record with the effect on. Just make sure you get it right (time wise). I use the same Boss pedal I think. Simplifies life, and delay is'nt as complicated in the mix like verb is.

My first song here - tell me what you think...

Vocals sound pretty good and the mix is smooth in general. I would cut back on the amount of synthetic instruments in the mix. Or maybe cut the volume on em a bit. When the music cuts down to more guitar, it sounds soooo good. Really cool song, especially on the 2nd listen. I love the vox...

What do real engineers think about home recording.

Harvey you're right, I am full of it most of the time. Stay cool, this thread's too serious for me.

What do real engineers think about home recording.

I don't think it's too complicated. For the most part we're working against the pros, by cutting them out. They're working against us by making us come to them for "better" sound. But the point of all this may be getting lost in gear and people and money. The point of all this is music, good...

I'm Losering (posting on a Friday night)

fprod - Yeah I think the comp might be too much too, I'll lighten it up. Tok - Thanks for the "guitars are big and up front" compliment. I've tried to highlight that as a signature part of my sound. Jamal and Erich - I think I may need to retrack the vocals. Jamal you're right in that I...

    Oh For Christs Sake...

I like the lo fi beginning too, makes it sound pro when it kicks in. Mix wise, I'd focus your improvements on the vocals. The actual vocals sound great. Like the above suggested I'd run slight comp over the mix. I'd also work with a pop filter or a different windscreen. Your s's and very...

I'm Losering (posting on a Friday night)

Well, the loser title is official. Friday night on the mixing clinic, I guess it could be worse. Here's a lonely song for a lonely night. "Walkin' With Me" Thanks for the help. A http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=2340&alid=-1

my first post in the clinic...

I like it. I might work the guitar eq a little bit with a tad of verb. Maybe not. Good song.
