Talking vocals sorta

I've been trying without avail to get the right type of vocal sound with one of my songs. I think the technique I'm using is off.

It's the type of vocal that's almost like talking, but really singing. I think Shaun Mullins does this type of vocal quite a bit. The best thing I've found is record close to the mic, but not on top of it. Other than that...????

Set up: Sonar, Delta 66, MXL 1000 condenser mic, Shure 58.

Suggestions? Thanks

Use the condenser for sure. Once you record the vocals compress them so nothing sticks way out. That way you can boost the volume. Another thing that might help bring them out of the mix is to roll off some of the lows or boost the mid's or high's a bit..
