So true. I get the business end of "the MPC sound" and "yo, do you use Pro Toolz". I just find it interesting that there are some people (engineers and producers included) that believe that things like groove and character within a song can vary based on the manufacturer of the equipment used to...
I totally agree about the way users interface with gear and with the commonality of it within a genre. I'm not really talking about the "sound" of the MPC (although I totally feel ya about the guitars) I'm more referring to the "feel" of a track that's produced from it. I've heard more than one...
Often when I'm creating a track for Rap/R&B clients, they ask me to use the MPC. When I ask why they say things like "because it has that hip-hop feel" or "I want it to bang in the club so it needs that MPC flavor". The arguement has been made that certain pieces of gear have different nuances...
Get your bounce on.....
I don't know why I found that so funny.
Last night I finished mixing an album (I hope) and I had to get my bounce on for like an hour and a half..........
I SWEAR I tried the search function because I was certain this had been discussed before. It yielded nothing. I can't believe that thread was last week and I wasn't able to get it on the search. Anywho, Mods feel free to lock this thread. Sheesh....
So when you're mixing how loud do you have your monitors? I hear a lot of engineers cranking it up when mixing but I think you lose your point of reference when you try and mix that loud. I've heard that 85db (from the location of your chair) is about the max you should run. I checked yesterday...
I think it's all in what you can bring to the table. If you're operating a small hobby type studio out of your house, then 20-50 per hour may be reasonable.
If you've got a sizable "commercial" room then 50-100 per hour could be a fair rate.
Of course your level of expertise has to be in...
Feel free to keep going Glen. This has been a heavily debated topic around these parts.
I am also interested in how bringing your levels close to 0 DBFS affects the signal after you mixdown.
Thanks for all of the insight everyone!
Edited to say DBFS (sorry)
Agreed. When I say pretty I was more referring to layout rather than cosmetics (although it is rather ugly), but indeed function beats form everytime.
Anyone, anyone?
Okay, this isn't actually a piece of recording equipment. I play in a band where it's sometimes necessary to play audio files from a laptop instantly. I need software that will make lots of .wav files readily available for playback.
BSI Stinger 2.0 is almost exactly what I'm looking for. Here...
Some hip-hop producers also say that the MPC has a certain "sound" to it. Plus they say that the sequencer/quantizing has a certain feel or "swing" to it. I've written on both. Every piece of equipment has it's own unique personality but I don't necessarily think one is more "hip-hop" than the...
I have the BX8s. I prefer them to the KRKs or NS10s in my studio. They are indeed a little bass heavy but as with any monitor, you learn to use what you have. Every monitor has it's own set of characteristics. You just have to practice enough to be able to understand them and translate them into...
Actually it's not always the engineer's fault. It's usual a question of if the PERFORMER has decent technique (along with the engineer). Sometimes if a singer starts bustin' out, clipping in inevitable, unless you use a tiny amount of compression while tracking. I usually set my threshold so...
Thanks for everyone's replies. Just as an update, the session was last night. It went pretty well. The guitars did indeed come out sounding pretty good. Nice rich, full bodied sound. I ended up using 2 AKG 414s about 8 inches from the guitars at the end of the body and pointed at about the 4th...
