    Rant

I can't stand by and watch this thread go on and on while calling a Led Zeppelin recording "lo-fi", or "low quality". Frankly, there are VERY few modern popular recordings which can lay claim to being as well recorded as ANY Led Zep recording. Is there noise, and bleed, and technological...

    B3 or V67G and MXL 603?

bluesmouse, any decision you make based on what you've read is roughly like a crapshoot. Without hearing your own voice through them, you aren't going to know in advance which one is perfect, or if neither of them are. Using your ears, you could find that a Radio Shack dynamic is the perfect...

Just got my Studio Projects B1

BTW, the colored dot on the box of SP mics will match mics pretty closely. It has to do with what the tolerance is on the frequency response curve. If a given mic is slightly higher, it gets one color. If it's slightly lower, it gets a different one. And if it's pretty much on the line, it...

    Big Question about mastering?

Mixing = taking different recorded tracks of music, and setting levels, pan, and various effects (EQ, compression, reverb, etc), in order to get an overall performance that achieves the desired sound. Professional mastering requires a ton of really expensive equipment. At the homerec level...

    Mastering: Art vs Science?

Mastering is probably not the issue here. Some multi-band compression (which most people think is synonymous with mastering) may help; however, you should be able to make a mix that will travel pretty well without it. Mastering should take an already good mix, and put the finishing touches on...

I know its been debated 1,000 times but for Rap vocals Shure 57 or 58?

It's pretty much the same mic, with a different windscreen. I'd buy the 57, since it's a more versatile mic, and you'll never regret having it. Every major studio has a stash of 57's... not as many rely on 58's all the time. The sound difference for your application is negligible. -mg

    cables i need?

yup, the Shack is your place! Tell the guy what you need, and he should be able to help you out. Microphone cable with a 1/4 inch end, and then a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter should do it. -mg

    click tracks?

I too am familiar with Emmit Rhodes, but only because of the Tape Op article on him this month (definitely worth reading!!!) As for the click, it'll either work, or it won't, and it all comes down to the drummer. If he/she doesn't have any experience playing to a click, don't expect it to work...

    Recording Background Sounds

for condensers, you could try the Rode NT-3, which will operate off of a 9V battery. I have one, and it is certainly a respectable mic. I think that the AKG C1000S also does, but I'm not sure. Depending on what you're going for, you might like the added sensitivity of a condenser... -mg

    Studio Projects C1

Darrin, the V67G is still available from most retailers, as is the V67B. The V67M was only available through Mars. 8th street music has a great deal going on the V67G with shockmount right now ($129). -mg

How can I make my music sound less professional?

Oh yeah, and there's a plug-in which will actually give you that "record-scratchy" sound (you know, the crackle sound you'd hear before and after the music). It's freeware, but I don't remember where I saw it... -mg

How can I make my music sound less professional?

How to sound less professional? Two words: Radio Shack ;-) Seriously, take Vurt's suggestion. Play with mic placement to get the tones you're looking for. Then, don't over-do it in the mix. Ease off on the reverb some, and chill with the EQ. Try dynamic mics on the vocals. Just keep...

    cables i need?

Well, I don't know the audigy platinum, but I suspect that it has a 1/8" line input, and perhaps a mic input. If you want better sound, you'll need a mic preamp which can put out a line level signal, and then a cable to go from the output of the preamp to the input of the card. If you just...

    oktava mk219 ??

I don't have one, so take this with a grain of salt, but there are folks here who have professed to love this mic. There were problems with the housing, which is why the 319 was made, but there are some great deals on a 219. If you're going to pick one up, I'd recommend looking on ebay, and...
