A few cheap mic possibilities for a kit: 2 Behringer ECM8000's for overheads 1 Shure SM57 on snare 1 Shure SM57 on kick or 2 MXL 603S's for overheads 1 Shure SM57 on snare 1 Studio Projects B1 on kick There's lots of other ways to go, this is just a jumping-off point, but something to think...

    Upgrading gear, NEED YOUR OPINIONS!!

Fatt, one thought, I'd look at a digital console, and buss out the signals via both analog and digital. Take, for example, a Yamaha 01/V (used, pretty cheap). You can run 8 analog outs into the MOTU, and then another 8 outs digitally into the MOTU. Of course, if your stuck on analog, you'll...

    Small Diaphram Condensors???

Well, I bought the NT-3 as the solution for "I need one mic to cover both acoustic and vocals". It's a decent mic for both, but not the ultimate mic for either. Kind of a "jack of all trades, master of none". Of course, if you're expecting the ultimate mic, you're forgetting that you do get...

    DIY Bass Traps

Ethan, I hope I didn't offend your sensibilities. No question, absorption is easily quantifiable. "What's going to make the biggest difference in my room for the least amount of dollars?" is the black magic. :-) And, of course, us musicians / closet-recording-artists are generally a pretty...

    Fiber optic mics

well, over at Recording.org, I've seen Stephen Paul talk about a "Laser mic" that he's working on, for some time down the road. It's certainly possible that it's based on the same idea. I've also tossed around the idea with a colleague of mine, and feel pretty confident that it would work...

    DIY Bass Traps

OK, I realize that this is practically sacriledge, but I came across a reference for DIY Bass Traps yesterday that wasn't Ethan's :-o It's here http://ic.net/~jtgale/diy2.htm And I'm wondering if anyone has tried anything like this. I've read the sites as to why panel absorbers are supposed...

The ULTIMATE Entry-Level Mic Pre Poll... :op

Well, Jeap, are you going to keep us in suspense... what is now the bang-for-the-buck champ? And, on a related note, I see some praise for the Event EMP-1. Anyone know how this compares to the other products with pre's in them from Event (EZBus, EMP-8). -mg

Whats the difference between a Tube MP and an Avalon?

Yo c7sus, FruscianteFan, you're right. For the most part, you are saying the exact same thing. Just one point of clarification. I tend to agree with FF, that markup is VERY high, on most products (not just in pro audio). Take that pill you mentioned, which costs about $.05 worth of...

Favorite Acoustic Guitar mic positions / techniques

I've definitely used the over-the-shoulder technique, with some sucess. Got some really nice results with a cheap dynamic (AKG D2300S) over the shoulder, with the windscreen off... who'd have thunk it? I just find that I like the sound at the neck joint a little better for my applications. -mg

Favorite Acoustic Guitar mic positions / techniques

So, I'm hoping that this thread might serve as the Kama Sutra of microphone - Ac. Guit. mating... Favorite positions, types of mics, combinations, etc? I usually just reach for my NT-3, point it somewhere between the 12th fret and the neck/body joint, and get rolling. I know that I've read...

How do we keep our ears and heads clear?

to clear the sinuses, forget the mustard... use WASABI! your head is instantly clear. As for allergies, I use and love Claritin. I haven't noticed it having a strong effect on my listening, versus like a sudafed or benadryl. -mg

Can't perform well in a studio

Everyone who has recommended "taking a drink" should be ashamed of themselves. Here's someone who's asking a question, who tells you that they gave up drinking 2 years ago, and you're telling them to fall off the wagon?!?!? Don't rely on external influences to help you get over this. This is...

Anyone know anything about the Neumann KM64?

Well, I haven't used the KM84, but I was at a session where we got to check out a well-maintained KM64, and I only had one thing to say... WOW!!! That mic is frickin' sweet! It's a tube small-diaphragm condenser, and on some bluesy acoustic guitar, it really captured the true essence of the...

    Cheaper LD Tube mics LIST.

Frankly, I have to agree with ausrock. Labeling your mic with a "German-sounding" name seems at least slightly misleading. How many companies ending in "deutschekraft" do you know of operating out of china, the US, etc? However, all's fair in Love and War, and sales is definitely a war. If...

RODE NT1-A Anniversary Model vs. Studio Projects B1

I see a lot of comments here about the Rode NT-1, but has anyone actually used the NT-1A? Because I don't really think that it's fair to assume that the NT-1A has the same shortcomings as some of the NT-1's which people disliked. Afterall, there was at least some redesign, if not a complete...
