learning some new stuff about m/s compression and Vitamin plugins

I'm spending a lot of time on the internet, since I'm not schooled in mixing - I'm reading how to mix vocals, plus playing more with a few plugins: the dbx-160 compressor in mid-side mode, and then the plugin by Waves called Vitamin. The stereo image spreader is key to enhance any reverb...

found a game changer for me

I've been remixing and remixing these sessions and I found a game changer for me. I'm not the most experienced home studio mixer, and so adding delay to acoustic music didn't appeal to me right away. I own the plugin by Waves called the Super Tap - 2 Taps, and it has a preset called Vocal...

Jimmy, Thanks for your input. Inexperienced I am, hoping to learn more as I go along.

Home Studio Owners: how did your first halfway serious mix/master for pay turn out?

Rob, That's how I'm feeling about it lately, not too much input is a good thing. Thanks for helping answer my question

Home Studio Owners: how did your first halfway serious mix/master for pay turn out?

theferryman, Bluegrass mixes can be bland in general, unless you're playing with Alison Krauss and Union Station.. but it's a pretty traditional music with traditional blends. The mic was a Shure KSM32, going into a GAP Pre73 jr, and into a presonus interface. We recorded in 88.2kHz into a...

Home Studio Owners: how did your first halfway serious mix/master for pay turn out?

This question is specifically for those owners of home studios who did not go to school to learn the trade. How did the first for pay project turn out? What were some of the mistakes you may have made? My first one turned out average. But the methodology of communication and delivery was...

inside corner walls with wallpaper - what to do

I have just a small space to record music. I have an inside corner perpendicular walls that are wallpapered right now. I am planning on having the guitar player sit in the corner looking out toward me, with a unidirectional condenser facing him (and the corner). I'm looking for some tips on...

TG Abbey Road Mastering from Waves won't work in Wavelab Elements

Anyone own the TG Abbey Rd Mastering plugin from Waves? It works fine in ProTools AAX version but will bring a serious error in Steinberg Wavelab Elements 9. I called Waves in Knoxville, TN and they couldn't help me. It sounds like a bug in the VST version of the plugin, to me.

    getting a Neumann TLM-102 tomorrow

I ordered a Neumann TLM-102 from Sweetwater and should be getting it tomorrow, for my home studio.. I hear the mic is great, looking forward to using it for acoustic instruments and vocals. It will be going into a Yamaha/Steinberg UR-44 preamp and converter. Anyone else own one of these? I'd...

two mixes, one by a professional studio and one by me (poll)

One of these mixes is from a professional studio, and one of them I did myself in my home studio. Guess which is which, why you say that, and which one you prefer. Thanks!! Mainline Runner - Banjo Hangout Jukebox Mainline Runner (my mix) - Banjo Hangout Jukebox EDIT: I didn't realize "My...

might be selling some Waves plugins

I'm not sure if I want to sell these or not yet - so I'm not listing them in the gear ad threads as of yet.. They're a bunch of Waves Audio plugins, over $5000 if you were to buy all new. I have all the licenses on a flash drive. I'm not as good as mixing as I thought I would be. Right now...

    another bluegrass song

I've struggled with the mixes recording here at my home studio. The room isn't ideal, and I'm only using mediocre equipment. I almost gave up on getting a good punchy sound. I decided to get Waves' Vitamin Sonic Enhancer and tried running the mix though it. It has eq, compression control and...

    mastering for iTunes

Thanks! My peaks are around -0.5dB when the long term loudness is -15 LUFS. My short term max is about -11 or -12 LUFS. I have a meter running usually which probably tells me everything I need to know, I need to learn to read it better. It sounds right, so I'm happy with that part.

    mastering for iTunes

What is exactly the difference between a physical CD master and a "mastered for iTunes" master for digital distribution? My guess, and what I've read online, is that iTunes will normalize the loudness to a certain LUFS level, like -15 LUFS. So one element of mastering for digital distribution...

    your favorite compressor for mixes

What is your favorite plugin to compress a mix? It could be on the mix bus or in the mastering chain. Preferably I'm looking at mixes without drums, like for folky music, bluegrass, etc.. My thoughts with the mixes I've been working with in bluegrass, not much compression is needed at all. A...

Either my ears are going, or my stuff sounds like crap. Need help

I'm using 5" KRK rokkit speakers to monitor, besides some Fostex T50-RP headphones. I'm so disgusted. Yeah, I'm comparing this to the CD he made earlier in the "real studio." For compressors I've got the CLA-2A & CLA-76. I also have Waves RVox. I'm using a RVox lightly together with the...

Either my ears are going, or my stuff sounds like crap. Need help

I am a home studio guy, been at it for 10 years or so working in Pro Tools on a Windows 10 computer. By this time, I should hear things or be able to figure out how to manipulate the tracks so it sounds pleasant. This is my first paid project that's going out to be sold physically and online...

my mastered mix - all in the box, using cheap pre's and cheap converter

I wish I could get that big lush sound, but I'm thinking better pre's and a/d converters would help.. So I had an opportunity to record a father/daughter bluegrassy song. I mixed and mastered this one, all in the box with a Golden Age Project preamp and a Presonus StudioLive Hybrid mixer a/d...
