    MBox has very limited inputs and for the price of Mbox you can go for a better competitor, but if you plan on sticking with ProTools, consider 001, worth the investment.

    To start with You need a good soundcard, (audiophile 2496 entry level quality card) A good vocal microphone (like Shure SM58) and a preamp preferrably a mixer w builtin preamp so you can use it with two or more inputs source (mics, instruments etc)

    If you are using General midi there shouldnt be a confusion in the keys and sounds that are mapped to, any other extra kits will create problems unless you trigger from the same synth. Record in GM , Transfer, and then change Kits.

    Just connect a audio cable from RCA mixer outs to 1/8 stereo line in of yoru computer. In your software select the recording source as "line in" and hit record. Thats the basic procedure.

    How do you lessen the CPU usage?

    Generally I'll be atleast using 12-16 stereo tracks and around 10-15 effects in it. I am running P4 overclocked to 3.0, 1G dual channel memory and 10000rpm SATA Drives, so far I didnt have any problem.

    Do you have a master effect inserted in that master fader? That could be a reason. When you bounce to track, how does the wave amplitude look like? Hot?

    Over clocking is not a big deal, nice softwares are available to test your processors maximum limits and you can over clock just one step less than that. I am running a 2.8 P4 overclocks to 3.0 easily and I can go further but stopped here to be safe. Memory is essential too, to reduce drop outs...

    Under cool edit options see what sound card is selected as wave in, it is just settings so dont freak out. PLay around in the options and high light your soundcard.

    Your XP1900 should handle just fine for 3 simultaneous tracks, Are you running a dedicated hard drive for recording or using the drive for other applications too? XP2500 will cost you 115 dollar so if you thinking about upgrading might as well as go with 2.8P4 C processor and a nice mother board...

    Just use an audio cable with 1/8" stereo pin on one end and RCA (red and White) on the other end. You can pick it up in any radio shack for less than 5 bucks.

    AC97 is an integrated soundcard which is not meant for recording. Even if you record you will be wasting all your time producing crappy sounds, Better go for a decent card and start your project.

    your soundcard driver is probably making the trouble, see if you can reinstall it and set more buffer.

    most of the powered subwoofers come with built in cross overs which you can set the frequencies of your desire, since you have bx5 (small speakers) you may need to set it at 150 hz to let more frequency. A Samson is a great investment, sounds good and pretty decent price...

    How much RAM is enough?

    I am using 1536mb right now and feels pretty ok with it, anything below 256 is not good cos your windows OS needs atleast 256mb to run properly.
