xlr to 1/4 is that balanced to un-balanced?

That will work. An XLR to a 1/4" TS (unbalanced) connector would work as well, but wouldn't be recommended. You can search for plenty of threads here about balanced versus nonbalanced connections. Most will say that especially for microphone use, you run a big risk of introducing extraneous...

    synth + pre-amp?

Are you bringing your synth up to its max volume before using the preamp? I usually find that turning up the volume on the synth introduces less noise than turning up the preamp does. If you've tried this, then yea, I'd try the nicer preamp to see if that makes a difference.

    PC vs. digital 8 track

The computer setup would be a bit pricier, with software and all, but probably quite a bit more flexible. Personally, I like the ease of editing on computer as opposed to a standalone unit. I guess it depends on your needs. Portability is a big one. How many simultaneous tracks do you...

    Favorite softsynth - what's yours?

I agree the FM7 sounds sweet. But I found a little daunting to navigate and create my own patches. Maybe just my thick head...

    How to use Sampler?

Well, I'm gonna need complete sentences at least. I think you said you want to use premade. You can use the import feature (file - import) in cubase to import audio. Then right click on the loop, and scroll to 'repeat...' and it will loop.

    How to use Sampler?

Are you talking about using a sampler to program your own drum sequences? Or are you talking about using pre-made drum loops in cubase?

Selecting a wave editor in SX

The internal editor is usually sufficient...and non-destructive, i believe. You could export audio to edit in sound forge if you wanted.

    Processing Midi - Reverb, EQ?

You can't add audio effects such as reverb to MIDI because MIDI is not audio. it is only information that triggers that notes on the VSTi's that in turn create audio. You can, however, add effects to the VSTi's without recording audio tracks. Hit F3 to open up your mixer, and make sure that...

Need a cheap, small rack case

Ebay! you can pick up used cases for usually about half that, I think. Check out SKB's website. They have a line that is shallower for smaller pieces of gear. don't know the price, but I'm sure you can pick those up used as well.

    ADAT souncards (what they)

The ADA8000 is an Analog to Digital converter. It converts 8 channels of analog audio to digital, and sends them via an ADAT lightpipe connection. I'm purchasing one for the MOTU 2408 MKII that I just bought. You can also check out the RME line of equipment, specifically the Digi 9652 or the...

How is the Cubasis learning curve?

Don't give up! Okay, I don't want to go on a rant here because that's not my style... But it kind of irks me everytime I go into the newbie forum (not implying anyone in present company is a newbie to recording) and there's another post saying "Hi, I want to make professional quality...

    Assigning memory to certain applications?

As far as I know, you can't allot a SPECIFIC amount of memory to be used for a certain application, only specify that you want one application to be 'higher priority' than the others... Meaning probably that it will steal resources when it needs them in order to run more smoothly. You could...
