I'm sure my way of doing things isn't for everybody, but it works just fine for me. I use Linux (Ubuntu 9.10 with the RT-kernel). So all my software is open source. Audacity is a perfectly capable wave file editor and mixer. Rosegarden for editing midi files. Timidity for playing midi files...

Guitars are inherently unbalanced. That's not an absolute. I know of at least one nutter (and I mean that as a term of endearment :) ) who has heavily modified, balanced guitars. But a normal, off the shelf, guitar is unbalanced.
