    Home Recording's Dirty Little Secret

Absolutely, David. But I think Bob's referring to the general level of musicianmanship, say, in Rock and Pop as a result of recording technology, etc., not the top level players to which you refer (and indeed belong, may I add).

    probably dumb mic question

Each mic will need it's own cable, unless it's a wireless one, a magical one, or it has a telepathephonical diaphragm. You could go buy three female-to-female XLR mic cables and stick a mic on either end of them - this would reduce the number of cables you require to connect all the mics, but...

    Favorite Drum Intros

Bill Bruford's 2-bar intro to South Side of the Sky (Yes -- Fragile) isn't too sloppy.

    Recording drums with one mic

Is your drummer a mkIII cyborg with micro-level multi-dimensional spacial awareness and motor memory velocity real-time response capabilty? If so, I guess the above suggestion might work. If not, there's a mkII on ebay right now, might do at a pinch. A variation on Dani's idea, albeit almost...

For those of you who rail incessantly on Behringer...

OK, that just cost me 2 minutes. I demand a refund.

Pop-filter to record closer to soundhole?

Agreed: it's all about the room when it comes to achieving good acoustic guitar sound, which requires a bit of distance between guitar and mic. Stick your ear up again the soundhole of a strummed guitar and it actually sounds horrible there; like a close snare mic sounds like it does, because...

    Snare drum Trick

I imagine a LDC on a tom would be tricky to gate if the snare's getting walloped and the probably tom less so. And 5 gated LDCs jittering on and off sounds like a can of auditory worms. Thanks for sharing the cancellation trick.

Sgt pepper 4-tracks? Got em? I do...

Dammit, got all the FLAC files, but can't open them. Have tried a couple of download suggestions but to no avail. Any idea what I might be doing wrong. Windows by the way... Any help appreciated. I'd love to burn this stuff to CD and send it to my Beatle freak friend in Thailand... R

    Strings Feel Very Light

Muttley's lengthy white paper on the subject summed it up: heavier gauge strings.

    Distortion pedals

Priced out of the stratosphere - Super Hard On pedal: 9 (or is it 8?) components on a piece of veroboard, a couple of jack sockets and a switch in a Hammond case. $25 of parts and 90 minutes of soldering.

    MXL v67g & AKG 414- A blind test

The "drama queen" thing was for emphasis, a kind of 6dB boost at 5kHz or so, just to make it stand out in the emotional mix.

How can I make my cymbals decay faster?

Don't post nonsense, Nick. The overheads are generally considered your main mics, SUPPLEMENTED by direct mics and room mics, the latter aren't there to 'compensate' for anything. If the guy was stupid enough to take that advice, he'd spend an hour dicking around only to find he had a cacophony...

What's it to you? He's just trying to maximise the number of responses.

How can I make my cymbals decay faster?

....and have the entire kit dropping out all over the place; brilliant idea, Nick.

    MXL v67g & AKG 414- A blind test

Awe, you know what he meant, ya bloody drama queen - "fake" as in 'fake assumptions' that we should be spending $$$ on mics. I think he summed it up very nicely.

Best Bang for Buck Mic & Recording Laptop budget $1600

That is about the best advice, I'd say (short of hiring someone top record you, which is the best option if it's just a one-off thing). All the mics Vag recommends are just fine, and with the exception of the 112*, are reasonable budget. * Sorry, in Japan, the 112 is ridiculously expensive.

Rode NT2-A: what kind of preamp?

DMP ~ John Hardy? Let's narrow things down a bit: 1. What's the rest of your set up? 2. What's your budget?

    Spanish Influenced acoustic guitar experiment...

Nice playing, and wouldn't have known there was any editing involved. I know the point of the thread is editing, but I'd toe the guitars in a bit, make them meld together more (still two parts, but not quite so distant from one another).
