    Active Monitors

Perhaps a little cheap I was mixing on my hifi speakers up to about a month ago....Perhaps a little budget for you but I bought a pair of Bi-Amped M-Audio Studiophile BX5A monitors the other week for £130 brand new, although I hear they go for as much as 200 quid in some places. Although there...

    Getting a punchier bottom end

Ok... still shit I think... Hey, Just wondering, have done some mixes of the same track and a different one: http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/~bhj/mp3s/runMix8.mp3 http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/~bhj/mp3s/introMix2.mp3 With regards to the first one, I'm really struglling to mix the vocals. Perhaps they...

Whats a finalizer? What does it do ?

So... So finalizing in that sense of the word is synonymous with normalizing? Cheers :-)

    Getting a punchier bottom end

Heh! ...Legend, dunno about that....Heh! But anyway, I mean I normalised the whole mix, not the individual vocal tracks (if thats what you thought I meant)... I dunno what I want any more...Perhaps I'l just go for shit...Heheh, I think perhaps I've done enough mixing today - maybe I'l do a bit...

    Getting a punchier bottom end

Ok...here we go... ...mixed down with the master pulled down by about 5dbs and added some compression to all vocal tracks, but maybe I over compressed a little. I then normalised the result. Better or worse? http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/~bhj/mp3s/runMix6.mp3 Cheers! :-)

    Getting a punchier bottom end

Compression? Ok, am going to try with some compression, see if that sorts things out. Damn my cheap dynamic microphone!

    Getting a punchier bottom end

Cheers, but... I'm not quite sure what you mean by the vocals distorting - I mean I obviously know what distortion is ;-), but could it be down to the fact that the vocals were recorded on a budget Shure BG1.1 microphone (cost be about £35 five or so years ago). Maybe I will buy another and...

    Getting a punchier bottom end

ok....one last time (hopefully but prob not).... I know you are all probably getting a bit sick of hearing the same track over and over again, but one last time, perhaps you could tell me what you reckon of the latest mix at the following link: http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/~bhj/mp3s/runMix4.mp3...

    Getting a punchier bottom end

Ok, will give that a go. Do you think there would be a benefit in turning up the backing vox as well as the lead vox Thanks Ben.

    Getting a punchier bottom end

Improvment? I have heeded your advice and replaced the kick sound; it seems a lot punchier and defined to me. I have also widened the guitar parts to free up the middle of the mix. Also, I've removed the reverb from the lead vocal and brought lead vocal up a bit. Also removed reverb from lead...

    Getting a punchier bottom end

More advice? Well it was a shot at the least,. I applied no compression to any of the drum sounds, althought some reverb to try and thicken them out (especially the hihat). Do you mean I should try and replace all of the drum samples or just the kick? When you say take down the fx on the...

    Getting a punchier bottom end

A shot at trying... All, Cheers for the fantastic advice; I have made an attempt at "mastering" one of my tracks, but still don't know if its that good. Here are before and after "mastering" results (mp3): before after

    Getting a punchier bottom end

Eq Sorry, I made a mistake, its actually a 1023-band EQ, (I only remembered some huge number before off the top of my head). Its built in to JAMIN. Also built in is a 31-band EQ. Both EQs cover the same frequency spectrum but the 1023-band version is splined in to far narrower partitions...

    Getting a punchier bottom end

Huh? I'm not sure I follow, do you mean to say that the limiter and maximiser cancel each other out (or sorts....)? Cheers!

    Getting a punchier bottom end

Hi, I'm using JAMIN software (30 and 1200 band EQs, low, mid and high band compressions, limiter and maximiser) to "master" my home recordings. Whilst I seem to be able to add plenty of sheen and get really nice wide mixes, they seem to lack in punch at the bottom end. I don't know if I should...

Which software you use to make audio recording

Open source All my recording software is open source under GNU-Linux. I use Ardour as a DAW (the very latest release - 0.99 is as stable as its ever been and very easy on the CPU), and JAMIN as a very professional sounding mastering application. I might consider some commercial applications...

Recorded in linux. What do you reckon? (Rock) ;-)

Style? Yes, its definitely that the vocal style is meant to be a little flat....er.... ;-)
