Is the drum programming shite?

I'm currently using a GNU-linux setup. Please let me know what you reckon of the tracks at

http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/~bhj/mp3s/

Download run.mp3 if you only want to download 1 of them, its prob the best.

The two tracks were recorded using ardour, a GNU linux-based DAW.
The drums were programmed using hydrogen drum machine (also GNU).
The guitar tones were created by stringing various LADSPA effects together (the GNU linux version of VST effects).
The bass guitar and string sounds were created on my guitar (a Godin LGXT), hooked up to a Roland GR-30 synthesizer.
Finally, the vocals were recorded using a Shure BG 1.1 (budget mic).
The mixes were finally passed through JAMIN (again, GNU), a post-production mastering tool to add low, middle and high-end compressions, EQ and maximising.
Everything was monitored through M-audio BX5 monitors

Thanks!
Ben.

Should also mention the style

The style is rock. The track

is influenced by the band alterbridge, whilst the track

Run for the sun
...is influenced by Creed.

Cheers ;-P

very nice guitar tones.

vocals are a little flat.

the drums are flat too.

What do I need to do?

Ok, so I understand when you say the vocals are a little flat, but what do you mean by saying the drums are a little flat? Do I need to up the pitch of each drum sample or something? Thanks

I like the sound of the trax. A little Porcupine Tree flavor. I just think the drums are a little thin in the low end overall. The cymbals and upper frequencies could use a little more sheen. As for the flat vocal, it may just be the style. I don't think you want to brighten them up too much; maybe just a little.
