    Flutter Emergency!!!

Umm... I would say that was a little harsh. I've been doing this for a while and have had no trouble with flutter before... I'm just asking because this is a new experience for me. Does it really sound like I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing?

    Flutter Emergency!!!

Hey guys, So, I have a mastering date in two weeks... and guess what? My Tascam 32 just decided to start having flutter problems. I'm about half way done with the mixes, and in the middle of playback of one of the tracks the recording started sounding funny - sort of detuned, strange sounding...

    Roland Space Echo (RE-201)

Honestly, I have no opinion on this matter... I was just letting you guys know what he said. I could see it working either way - as for normal studio tape getting jammed, I've been using a loop of SM911 in it for about 20 hours now and I haven't had any problems with it sticking or jamming. I...

    Roland Space Echo (RE-201)

So I talked to my technician and he had some interesting things to say. He said that the tape from an 8-track would work okay - if you can find one in mint condition - but it won't really last that long and won't sound that great. He said that the original tape was made with whale oil (yeah...

    Tascam 38 w/ M-308B mixer advice

That's probably right at market value - if the 38's in amazing shape. I would try and ask more like $700. :). Generally, the guys around here will tell you to take every precaution before buying a used reel to reel. Like, get new tape (1/2" RMGI SM-911 is the stuff for that machine), clean it...

    Roland Space Echo (RE-201)

Really? Like, just splice a piece together from an old 8-track tape cartridge? I was doing some research and I'm glad I did... I don't even know what "self-lubricating" tape is, but it looks like I should read a little more because, from what I saw, "normal" R2R tape (456/SM911, etc.) can be...

    Roland Space Echo (RE-201)

Thanks for the manual! That's great... it says, "Adjust head gap so that it is: 1. vertical to platform, and 2. located at the center of the tape." Sounds simple enough! Love these old manuals.

    Roland Space Echo (RE-201)

I picked up this beauty a couple months back and just recently replaced the tape loop. It sounds great, but a couple of the heads are really out of alignment. It has a five head setup: I believe it's erase, record, playback, playback, playback - but I could be wrong about that... The erase head...

Looking for a 4-track recorder... Need advice!

I can't speak from personal experience, but I've heard the Tascam 424 is a beast... Also, the Tascam 244 and 246 are supposed to be amazing (if you can get one for a good price). In terms of a "4-track," I'm assuming you mean a cassette recorder? The 57 is a damn good mic for what you are...

    I just got a TSR-8!

Yeah, that's what I was kind of thinking... it might be the angle, though. Hopefully it isn't anything serious. I will definitely get it serviced before I start using it - if anything to make sure it's set up for the right tape (and it's aligned properly, etc.). Thanks again for the comments...

    I just got a TSR-8!

Thanks guys! I guess I'm adding to my setup... I got my Tascam 34 about 3 years ago, and I've been waiting for the right time to add some more tracks - been holding out for a 1/2" 8 track for a while. I was really hoping a 48 or 58 would pop up, and the guy who has serviced my decks in the...

    I just got a TSR-8!

Hey guys... So I'm pretty excited about the TSR-8 I picked up a couple of hours ago from this quirky dude who went digital. It's extremely clean, but I don't exactly know about the heads. This is my first 1/2" machine, so, first-hand, I don't exactly know if there's a slight uneven wear...

    Reel Question...

So, I've been searching for a thread about reels - more specifically uneven reels... I couldn't find anything so I thought I would just ask. I have several reels where the flanges are slightly bent and hit the tape as it plays/rewinds. Is there any way to straighten out reel flanges that have...

How many here are 'Analog ONLY'?

I've had a hard time incorporating any digital equipment into my signal chain... I wouldn't really know where to start. I have done some dumps to a DAW, however, which I am not opposed to (sometimes the flexibility works better for certain things). Anyway, all analog? How about all TASCAM...

    Favourite analog producers/engineers?

Steve Albini. Still keeping the all-analog alive. Check out Joanna Newsom's Ys. Pretty amazing considering he recorded The Pixies and In Utero (among many other things)...

    Typical... Bedroom layout

Those videos are great! That seems to make things a little easier... I mean I always knew I was going to have to treat the room, but the exact layout was made much clearer through watching some of those videos. Thanks for the tip!

    Typical... Bedroom layout

Well, sh**. I didn't think anybody responded to this. I wish I wouldn't have set up everything already. I'm at work right now and can't watch these, but I will check them out when I get home. I wish I would have found this earlier. My fault. Well, it looks like I'm going to have to start...

Know where I can get a pdf Manual for a Tascam M-308 Mixer?

Honestly, just go on ebay and spend the $15 or whatever. That's what I did to complete the manual my 312 came with. I am pretty sure that there isn't a free pdf copy online... just search "TASCAM M-300 manual." There are several options. Or, you could ask here and I'm sure some people would...

    Typical... Bedroom layout

Yeah, I would love to do it that way, but the entrance to the room is in that corner and it honestly isn't big enough for all my stuff unless I'm okay with not being able to open the door... and it would really cut off the rest of the room. Thanks for the suggestion though!

    Mixer suggestions

I second the m-300[b] series. I have the 312b and absolutely love it! (except for some scratchy faders, which I somehow can't clean enough...). Funny, I also used the m-216 and loved it too. The only problem is that it doesn't have phantom power, which can be a real drag if you're borrowing...
