Basic stuff you need when you building an audio workstation would be
Stuff you NEED:
Motherboard (I think ABit is reasonable well liked)
CPU (processor) at least a 500Mhz Intel (ideally a proper intel, not celeron)
RAM (memory) minimum of 128Mb
Video Card Pretty much anything -Voodoo3 2000...
James,
Firstly, you've got to decide what kind of computer you want - ie. are you more comfortable with a Mac, or do you use PC's? Also, would you describe yourself as computer literate in regard to hardware? If so, then it's much easier for us to give you ideas - I can talk part names and...
I've never used an orb drive, but I'm a bit wary of any sort of proprietory drive. These manufacturers tend to come and go relatively frequently, taking support with them.
Syquest had a ton of quite reasonable drives, but ceased to exist (and the media is now practically impossible to get your...
Steve,
You get analog 'warmth' by getting 3000' of 2" tape, wrapping your entire body in it, and lying in the sun. Cos it's black, it absorbs the heat brilliantly :D

You've got a double negative in there - I'm going to assume that you are not allowed to use Dolby NR.
If the hiss is at a constant frequency, see if you can get your hands in a notch-EQ, or track down a de-hiss filter (you don't say if you're working in digital or analog here)

You can have a look at your DMA settings by either looking through the BIOS, or using a nifty little program called X-Teq. You can get it from www.x-teq.com . It's basically a cool program that can tweak just about anything on a Win system, particularly if you're running NT.

Mackies have plastic casings n their pots? The cheap little buggers - scratch them off the possible mixer list...if i'm going to pay an arm and a leg for a decent sized desk, I want decent components to match

I'm not much of a MIDI person, so I won't step into that discussion, suffice to say that the Echo cards aren't the only prosumer soundcards on the market - there are a number of cards that also support MID I/O etc. I think (although a bit of research on your part wouldn't go astray) that the...
RE: the SCSI/IDE(ATA) question, search the site - there are some enormously detailed threads on this that were running around early March.
The merits of CD-RW have also been discussed at length in a number of other posts. Again, the search will bring most of those up.
Can't tell you anything...
Sport,
I've got a sample contract that I had a lawyer draw up for contract programming work (which is probably a bit more technical than for music). The lawyer (for $800AUS) gave me a Word file copy of the contract, with a heap of comment blocks attached, along with alternatively worded clauses...
I'm pretty sure that impedance and ohms are not the same thing, but the difference is technical
The answers to your questions can be found at http://recordist.com/rap-faq/current

Having a lawyer to draw up a standard contract wouldn't be a bad thing - get him/her to write up the contract with a selection of clauses, and include a description of what each clause means. This way, you'll have a contract that can be modified by you over and over again, but changed around a...
Just an addendum to Grizzly's post.
In Win Explorer, an audio file should be called Track<X>.cda, and have a file size of 1K, where X is the track number. Anything else is a data file

The switch marked "PPwr +48" is the phantom power switch (phantom power usually being 48 volts)
From left to right, the switches are
Left: +20dB gain switch - adds 20dB of gain to the signal. Push it and you'll see what is meant by that.
Middle: The phantom power switch (+48 volts)
Right...
Now that I think about it, Hoontech make a heap of add-on cards for SB Live soundcards, so they are worth having a look at.
You can find them at www.hoontech.com

Don't plug anything into the mic jack of the sound card - nothing wil sound any good. If you've got a 4-track, use that as a preamp, and run the putput of the fostex into the line in on the sound card.
BTW, this topic has been covered a lot in the forum, so do a search, and you'll find posts...
The SBLive's digital output is not an optical out - its a coaxial \-type digitial output, so the minidisc won't record peanuts.
What you will need is a converter box. There's one on the market called the CO2 or the CO3 at http://www.midiman.com or if you're feeling a bit poor, you could make...
