    Shamrock recording tape

baking time Yeah I like the food dehydrator idea. Can you recommend a standard baking time or does that depend on the tape condition?

    Shamrock recording tape

A "reel" sticky situation indeed Great information and much appreciated Ghost and Beck. Those articles were eye opening and jaw dropping to be sure. I have a very large collection of tapes to archive of which many are Shamrock tapes. Now I know that I have to bake them before playing them. Then...

    Shamrock recording tape

Actually the tape seems like it's in pretty good shape and the tape path is clean so far. It's just tough to rewind initially and plays a bit slow at the end of the reel. These were stored in the heads-out position (rewound) for over thirty years so that may have something to do with it. :) I...

Newbie requesting some voice recording guidance

Audacity Once you get your audio recorded in Audacity you can then bring your stock music clip into the session (select import audio from the project menu) and move it to the front or back of your voice track using the time shift tool. You can then use the fade-in and fade out-function on the...

    Shamrock recording tape

Has anybody here used Shamrock tape? Don't laugh I know it's not the greatest. This stuff is really bogging down my tape machines in the FF and RW modes. I believe this phenomenon is called "stiction" and I need to be careful with these recordings since they were made in the 1970's. I have heard...

    'Ramblin', Scramblin'

As for the earlier recordings that were processed on the triangular dither I am still uncertain how they were effected and if I need to re-record them or not. I don't think that I can here any difference. I have tried the different dithering settings in real time.

    'Ramblin', Scramblin'

Thanks for that response. I use Audacity for sound editing and the "triangle" setting may just be a default setting but I am not certain. Since this is an archiving project of open reel to digital transfers I prefer to leave the transfers unprocessed. I am not even cleaning them yet. Thus I am...

    Healthy Demagnetizing

I go in circles about 1/8" to 1/4" away from the heads and metal tape path parts for about 10-15 seconds each then move away very slowly. How often are you supposed to demag? Before every important recording?

    'Ramblin', Scramblin'

I have made several recordings of late and exported them to wav 24/44100 with the dithering set to triangle. Can someone tell me what this means? I was wondering if I need to re-do the recordings now with the dithering set to "none". The other dithering options are: rectangle, triangle, shaped...

    azimuth and alignment

Yes they are home recordings made on different tapes without test tones. They are also at different speeds, 1 7/8, 3.75 and 7.5. I was just kidding about the epoxy :)

    azimuth and alignment

Maybe I will epoxy those screws in place so I don't ever have to worry about it :D I use water to clean the pinch roller and it amazes me how much iron oxide comes off of it.

    azimuth and alignment

fine tuning Very good sound. Sometimes I wonder if these tape machines need to be fine tuned every once in a while. I mean, this machine is over twenty five years old. I have the owner's manual. Now it's time to get the service manual.

    azimuth and alignment

I just started making open reel transfers to digital files for archiving using my Akai GX-4000D. I clean and demag the heads regularly. The playback sounds great on this machine but I was still wondering if everthing is aligned properly and if I should get it serviced. Should I check and...

No mic knowledge. Working from ground up...

Another possibility I like my Sennheiser E-835 microphone very much. I have also read several threads on this site that reinforce my opinion. :)

Are you using a mic preamp? If so make sure that you are going into your soundcard thru the 'line-in' from the preamp. What kind of soundcard are you using?

    The Shocking Truth

So it looks like a combination of friction and low humidity levels can create some serious electrostatic charging in ye old studio and really mess up a tasty recording. Thanks for helping me clear this all up. Does this mean that I can't fool around in my studio anymore?? :D
