I looked into surround mixing a few months ago, it quickly became very clear that making the step up to surround is a $40,000 investment. Right now there just isn't any usable homerecording-type surround gear.

I've had small pops before between two very close clips, but very small fades will fix that. Just make sure you have "snap to grid" enabled so that you don't have to worry about lining up the clip properly.
