I know this is mostly a preference quesiton and different preamps work better with different sources, but I'm hoping to at least be guided in the right direction. I'm looking for a two channel preamp used almost exclusively on heavy distorted guitar (Mesa half stack and Gibson Les Pauls mostly)...
1) record a bitchin guitar in a bitchin guitar amp. do it twice, or more, with different tones...clean, distorted, dirty, everything. pan them accordingly about 80% left and 80% right...where you put what is up to you.
2) mic it with whatever accurately represents the tone you want
3) track...
The 002R is great. Very reliable, a mono switch, 4 pres (not amazing, but can get the job done), a lightpipe input for expanding it with products like the presonus digimax lt. I used to use MOTU products like the 24i/o and the HD 192...and this stomps all over it in reliability (though the...
Hey, I was wondering how loud you guys generally record guitars at. Both clean and distorted. I realize different volumes affect guitar tone and such, but is there any advantages/disadvantages/differences with different amp volumes in the recording chain? Thanks
Use an exciter to boost up the click instead of just EQing the hell out of it. Noise gates can sometimes click when they open/close (or sometimes cut the sound so drastically it sounds clicky in a mix).
Hey, just letting everyone know, I found some wall plates from ProCo that served the purpose much better than the snake would have. With some custom cords from Whirlwind, it sound be pretty sweet. Thanks for the replies.
The snake is mostly for ease of use. It's running in two different rooms and I'd prefer having everything neatly organized in the little box and just wrapping up the actual cords going to the mics. I still have to use the actual tracking room for my bands practice space etc, so I don't really...
Hey, I'm looking for a 16x4 snake. Just wonderng what you guys think would be the best quality one for around $300. Ideally, I wanna get it at Guitar Center with the no payments/interest thing goin on. And of coarse, the shorter the better since it's for recording...anything over 6 feet will...
I used to have those Hi-Hats...there roughly 70's hats. They sound great, very heavy, but not like a bell. I've seen collectors actually looking for hats like that...so good find. They also recorded VERY well.
We're playing the heavier kinda of "screamo" would be the easiest way to describe it. It's been on several snares, but I'm mostly concerned about my own. It's a DW Bronze snare, 14". The snare is tuned to where I like it, and is loud as hell. I use Attack Terry Bozzio heads, tuned up high...
Hey everyone...I'm not sure if this should be here or the studio building section. I'm having trouble getting a really nice tight snare sound and I'm wodering if it's the room. I've got a good grasp on choosing pres, mics, position...but the snare just sounds too laid back. The room has no...
I think the easiest thing you can do at this point, is to learn how to listen to your headphones. If your room has terrible acoustics, monitors would always give you a false impression of what's going on. Standing waves, flutters, etc would just destory your mix. Just take the headphones...
Well, what kind of song are the drums for? I agree they sound fake, but it might be perfect for whatever you're doing. IMO you could get away with the kick sound in a fair amount of genres...but the snare and hihat sounds aren't quite as universal.
Hey, i'm in the market for a new preamp that can liven up distorted guitars a bit. Price range is absolutely no more than 1k since I have some other stuff to buy. I already own an Avalon M5, and it's just so sterile that I can't stand it anymore. I've been using AT4050s, Blueberrys, SM57s...
I've seen some studio footage of David behind the kit...I doubt Terry Bozzio does it. And if there was a ringer in for David, I'd assume it'd be Jose Freese since he seems to be the man of the hour in that respect.
They're actually supposed to be bad sounding monitors. The relative theory is "if it sounds good on the NS10s, it'll sound good on anything" In any event, they're in every major studio in the world give or take...they're doing something right.
Andy Wallace doesn't do most of the effects. It's done during tracking, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't touch any of that for LP. If you listen to their old Hybrid Theory stuff, the songs that carried over into LP are done in almost the same fashion...the stuttering, sampling, etc. Andy just...
pinstripes are kinda standard when you aren't too sure what to get. they are a two ply head. you should get clear ambassadors for the bottoms...which is almost 100% agreed upon. they're a 1 ply head, which is usually the only kind of head you'd want to use on bottom. for snares, it's very...
