    1 Head, 2 Cabinates, Recording

well you have a lot of options that mostly depend on the sound you're looking to achieve...which i can only imagine is hi-gain in your face since it's a 5150 and a mesa. if that's what you're going for, i'd suggest close micing both cabs. a room mic can add an ambience that'll take away from...

    awesome bass

there's also the mixing techniques that the engineers were using. a di box will generally not warm things up the way you're looking to, especially not the cheaper tubes ones (which i used to own a couple). try micing your amp with a mic for a bass drum like the beta 52 and also running a...

    Hi-hat purchasing advice

i've owned a custom pairing of zildjians (new beat top and k custom dark bottom) that was awesome. very clear, even tone. but i've recently fallen in love with the special 12" recording hats mentioned above. VERY clear crisp sound. they'll sound and feel unusual at first but really fit in a...

    Room questions

I have two options for recording my drums in. I have a DW Satin Oil kit (13" 16" 22" kick), DW 14" bronze snare, 12" zildjian special recording hihats, 20"k custom dark ride, 18" and 19" z custom rock crashes, 19" k custom dark china. i'm recording with 2 firepods using two 57's on the snare...

    Sub kick wiring

if memory serves, a speaker from a guitar cab won't do much as they have roll offs appropriate for a guitar. you would get the best results (in most situations) if you used a full rage speaker such as a PA speaker or one in a bass cab.

    Slap Bass

Hello everyone, I've done some searches to no avail, and messed around for hours, but just can't get this sounding as I'd like it to. I've tried a couple different basses, and there is a very confident talented bassist behind it, so it's not performance related. I can't see to get very...

Queens of the stone age drums setup

Dave Grohl hitting the drums so hard that he literally bent the rims after every song. That's a real key point to the sound on the first record. He also recorded the drums seperate from the cymbals, which is why those drums sound so tight. These came from an interview I read with the engineer...

    mixing a whammy pedal solo...

so the guitarist in my band insisted on putting a solo in one of our songs featuring the digitech whammy pedal...set 2 octaves up. if that wasn't enough, he's playing rather high on the fret board. now, the solo is cool, fits the songs, blah blah, so we don't want to just record it an octave...

    Best settings for Presonus pretube

I always ran the drive on half way and then used to the gain to dial in the volume I actually need. On a different note...swapping out the tube in it can make a surprising difference. Even though it's still starved plate, the signal still travels through it, and it still counts.

    The 2 Camps of Preamps

Well it's pretty universally known that it doesn't matter how expensive the preamp is, if it sounds right for the song. However, on the same token, I've owned an Avalon M5 ($1500), and I currently own as Groove Tubes Brick ($400), and I honestly think The Brick beats it hands down. I've also...

    Studio set-up for drummers...

First off, I have a tracking room and a mixing room. I simply taught one of my friends how to set levels. I played through 3 songs or so and made some slight mods to where the levels were (since he didn't understand everything going on), and went to town after that. Worked for me.

How much Mac Power is enough??

As a hardcore mac user/mac dork...there is NEVER enough mac. I have a Dual G4 1.42 each, 2gigs of ram, and I can pretty much do anything I want. Altiverb and Ozone can beat the shit out of my resources a tad, but it's understandable (and also while I'm running 50 audio tracks, all with plugs...

    New mic closest to U47?

i'm going to assume (and pray) that the last post was sarcasm when you said they were selling for $200. Because they're actually about $5k. Though still signifigantly cheaper than a vintage U47.

Need help with Live Drum mix

Here's my take on it... http://homepage.mac.com/zzfdvz Compression and EQ on the kick Compression, EQ, and verb on the snare Stereo Imaging, EQ, Compression, and limiting (just to kill a couple transients) on the OHs If you want specifics, PM or something.

fix the mix or the master?

in regards to what your computer can handle...why not just just send the mix to a bus and mix it down, or bounce it, or whatever it is you do as your final process...then apply the mastering to just the lone audio track in a whole new file. you'd have more resources for the mixing then, and...

    Avalon preamp Vs. Digi 002

I've used the M5 and the Digi002 pres and there's a pretty considerable difference. Both in my mind are pretty sterile and don't add much color to the sound. However the m5 is MUCH more detailed, especially in the high end. The 002 pres are quite usuable though, they never came across harsh...

    preamp comparison

Hey guys, I don't know how many of you guys have actually tried both of these, but I'm looking to get a nice tube preamp, and the two I'm most interested in are The Brick and The Robbie. I love the 737...but out of my price range. Infact, so is the Robbie, but I'd scrape it together if it's...

    Backing Vocals

I think I might know the answer to this, but I wanted some outside opinions. When tracking backing harmonies, particularly higher harmonies, how are the pros getting the notes so smooth. There are many recordings out there with the lead singer doing his/her own backing vocals, and the higher...
