best and easiest mic for home recording on a computer at a low price

I'll second (or third, or fourth..) the SM57. The SM57 is an industry standard for not only screamy vocals (Chris Cornel uses one live) but for mic'ing guitar cabinets, and snare drums, among other things. Oh and the SM7 is what James Hetfield uses when he records. Nice mic, but maybe too...

    NTK vs Oktava MKL2500?

Justsomeguy - You're a "mic guy" so you're drawn to any mic like a moth to a flame. Ha ha. Justsomemicguy. :) On a more serious note, I think I'll have to check into these as well. Since I first started posting here I've been bitten by the mic bug myself. Ok I'm back from looking at these...

    Drum mics on a budget?

I recently started recording my kit. At the moment I'm using the following mics. AKG D112 - Kick drum Shure SM57 - Snare MXL 840 (pair) - Left and right overheads The AKG D112 is all over the place and easy to find. I'm just starting with this mic and need to play with it more, but so far it...

Am I the only one using a StudioLive 24?

Studiolive 24? I'd be using one of those in a heartbeat if I could afford it. I'm using a Presonus 1818vsl at the moment but yes, I'd be using the 24 or 32 if they were within the budget. Eventhough the 16 is nice, I know that as soon as I got it home I'd be thinking "Man, I shoulda got the...

I'm still in highschool. Is Audio Engineering a good consideration for a job?

Lot's to say on this... You ever hear about the theory that A and B students usually find themselves working for the C and D students who went to work instead of sitting in a class room? The same thing kind of applies here. If you were the employer, would you hire somebody based on a...

    Want to record upcoming Jam

Hello folks. Over the last couple of years I have hosted a few parties/jam sessions for my Carvin BBS friends, but this year I want to try and record it into Pro Tools. We'll be jamming in my garage and I have no illusions that this will sound "amazing"; I just want to record it, do a little...

Is a sub Needed with An 8 inch monitor ?

When looking to upgrade from the "toy" monitors (you know the type with 2" speakers) I looked into several but ended up going with the Yamaha HS80ms (8")simply because I felt with the 50s (5" speakers) I would be looking for that sub very soon. With the 8's I do not feel a need for a sub at...

    Interface

I picked up the Presonus 1818vsl so that I could record my drumset. So far it's been working great. It has 8 XLR combo jacks on the face of it with individual volume controls along with output volume and headphone volume. It of course provides +48 phantom power on all 8 channels (2 buttons...

    Squiers getting good again?

In all honesty, even though I have some nicer pieces, I do have and enjoy playing a Squier P-bass special. It's a great bass. For the OP and the college trip, a Squier with a good set up and/or pick swap will make a great workhorse guitar. I used to have a Squier Deluxe (crap another line)...

    Squiers getting good again?

So they were more like Fenders back then? Is that what you're saying? Ha ha. Just stirring things up. I agree with the previous post about there being too many lines of "Fenders" to keep track of. I mean seriously Squier Bullet Squier Affinity Squier Standard Squier Classic Vibe...

    Look at the price

I guess the usual Les Paul for $2,500 wasn't over priced enough for them. I guess there are still people willing to believe that if the buy "Eric's" (or any other guitar hero's) guitar or amp, that they will suddenly play or sound like him. Sooo stupid. I prefer my own...

So which instrument do you record first?

How do I record? Generally speaking I record ..... When I get the spark of an idea, it could be on guitar (most likely), bass, keys, drums, or a vocal (rare). I then start a new session in PT10 or Studio One. I have templates in both set up and ready to go with all the routing done and my...

    Pro Tools 11 announced.

For the PT universe, the current Eleven Rack is definitely the way to go. You can buy PT10 for $699 or buy the 11R for $699 and it comes with PT. It's like buying PT and getting the 11R for free. Not too shabby in my book.

    Which version to purchase..

Steenamaroo - Yes, my AVID account shows the license for PT11. It's just sitting there and chillin' for now.

Finished my project studio/pics and clip

Looks like a nice place to work. Tiny but well done. I have to admit the "Amp Tower" is something I've been dreaming about doing for a while now. I think it would be great to have a shelves of amp heads in the control room with the mic'd cabs being in the "live room". That way the engineer...

    New Recording Studio

Woo Whoooo! Another Johnson Millennium 150 user. I love that amp so much I picked up a second one. Man I wish I had a space like that. One day...... one day *sniff sniff*

    Striving for vintage sound! Tips?

One thing you might try... ... if you want the "all at once in a room" thing, but the space isn't big enough to do it, you could always record some guide tracks for the drummer, then record only the drums in the room. Once that's done, take the kit out, and put guitar guy to one side of the...

    two different mikes for overheads?

I'd say go for it. Just try it and see how it turns out. Try the AT2035 on the drummers right (I'm guessing its the ride side) with the Oktava on the left (hi-hat side). Then once you're done with the first pass, flip them around so the AT2035 is on the left and the MC 012 is on the...

    Which version to purchase..

Steenamaroo Yes, I understand that PT11 will work fine and that 3rd party plugin companies will be making plugs for it (they'd be stupid not to), but for the moment I'm happy with PT10 and have no "Oh I gotta get that!" thing going on about PT11. Like I said I have the license for PT11...

Why can't you master in a home studio?

You can. Here's the thing though, and I'll use microphones as an analogy, a microphone is like a set of ears without a brain connected to it. It will hear anything you put in front of it, but it can't pick out a single voice at a crowded ball game like you can. You can focus on paying...
