    Maybe this one...

I think Sting's "Ten Summoner's Tales" is a masterpiece, musically as well as lyrically. Unfortunately he seems to have lost his feeling for really good songs, as the latter albums are somehow weak. smirky

    songwriting thoughts

Billy: My first songs (which I wrote about two years ago) sound terrible to me now, and if I compare them to my new ones, I definitely notice that I have been improving. I'm convinced that it's not only talent but a big amount of self-critics that brings you forward. I bought a book about...

Why Can't I Make It Longer?

helpful quote... my early songs were usually too long and complicated, not catchy enough. I once read the following quote, which I found very helpful for improving my songwriting: "A song is a three-minute movie playing to an audience with the attention span of a butterfly. Once you break the...

    any experiences with mp3.com?

if I sign in as an artist member and load up a song: is this song "somehow" copyrighted or can it be stolen easily? or can I somehow claim that I wrote the song (maybe through the date of upload?) I would love to put some songs on mp3.com, but don't want to send them all to Washington before to...

how do you write your songs?

the "ghost" of W.A.Mozart? DJ: didn't Mozart also have all the music in his head before writing it down? seems Brian Wilson copied this way of writing ;-) I recently also had all the stuff in my head before putting it to paper, it was a process of just five minutes. wish this would happen more...

    The Muse

When I have a lot of time to write, I usually can't write anything (just sit there for hours and hours with no results). When I'm busy, on the other hand, my mind's flooded with good and fresh ideas, and I finish a couple of songs in just one or two days (although I would have other things to...

pitch shift - how do I get rid of every bit of my real voice??

thanks a lot, I'll give it a try (yes, I am feeding the Microverb fromt the board). maybe I can defeat the stereo buss assignment on my MD4. I mean, it's not so that the song needs the pitch shift, but it would sound a lot cooler... smirky

Do you know when it's good?

If the melody can stand on its own (I try to sing it a capella or just play it), then it's ok for me. it shouldn't sound as if the melody was based on the chord progressions, but vice versa. sorry if I repeat a previous thought of mine in another post, but I truly think that too many chords...

pitch shift - how do I get rid of every bit of my real voice??

You mean the Microverb is simply not good enough to handle it? bad news... =-) the Eventide Ultraharmonizer - sounds expensive. would you recommend it (is it worth its money)? thanks a lot smirky

pitch shift - how do I get rid of every bit of my real voice??

I use the Alesis Microverb for the pitch effect (which is connected to my 4-track-recorder), but as I said above, there's always some "rest real voice" :-( smirky

Need pointers on song.... U help?

You didn't write this song to be played on the radio, did you? the atmosphere of the song is quite impressing, but I miss melodic lines, hooks that get stuck in your mind. but on the other hand it's industrial... somehow I've got the feeling that you packed more than just one song into this song...

pitch shift - how do I get rid of every bit of my real voice??

I have an MD4 and a Microverb. my problem: I want to record a passage with my voice pitched down a lot, but I always hear a rest of my real voice (although mixer is at 100% and on the MD4 effect is at 100% too). how do I get rid of my voice and record just the pitched one??? thanks a lot smirky

    Writeing songs

Hey CJ, listen to Bob Marley, there's a lot of melodic ideas in his songs. sometimes I set up a cool bass line first and then try to sing some words to it. what I found out is that too many notes or melodies spoil a song, and that simple tunes are more catchy... try to experiment with scales too...

Why Can't I Make It Longer?

I set up a scene in verse 1 and try to develop the story in verse 2, the bridge is usually a sort of conclusion or even solution. if you have two verses and a bridge, you won't need a verse 3 (would get a kind of long song, wouldn't it?) before writing I often do a short brainstorming, then pick...

bass and 3/4 measure - HELP!

I have no problems playing interesting bass lines to a 4/4 beat or other straight measures, but I'm often totally lost if it's 3/4. Any suggestions how I could solve this problem? thanks!

how do you write your songs?

one day I realized that one of my fav songs, "knocking on heavens door", just contained of 4 notes, and I was so impressed that I developed my own method of approaching a new song: I often "force" myself just to use 3-4 notes (in most cases c, d, e and low a in a major c - scale) while composing...

how do you write your songs?

sometimes when I'm listening to the radio I even find myself humming NEW, totally different melodies to existing chord progressions. inspiration comes also when I take my electric guitar, turn on the amplifier and play some riffs. funny: although my songs are almost everytime in 4/4 it's somehow...
