The one you like best has the best response and you should keep that one. If you can't tell the difference then flip a coin
the charts will usually tell you how the mic performs with a 1k test tone at 1m. If you are recording 1k test tones at 1m this may be important information but otherwise...
Cascade Fathead BE ribbon mic is ~$130
it's a little outside what people normally suggest but I've been using one for a couple of years now and really like some of the sounds you can get with it
It' nice and smooth, not screechy and painful like some cheap condensers and seems to me to be a...
You said you couldn't understand how anyone could possibly not find -20dBFS loud enough. I explained why it my be barely audible in some systems
It' doesn't matter to you on your setup, but the OP is not running your set up and being able to hear his recording matters to him. If he has a low...
-20 dBFS is just a meaningless arbitrary number without knowing how converters are calibrated. It will give you completely different voltages at the analog/speaker outs depending on how your converters are calibrated.
If you have high headroom converters then sure -20 dBFS could be around line...
I wouldn't use a condenser mic at all
first choice would be a Royer 121 ribbon but assuming that money is a consideration, a more budget friendly Cascade FatHead BE ribbon would probably sound nice without all the harshness of a cheap condenser on an instrument with a tendency toward ice pick...
I've been playing around with acoustic setups getting ready for a session in a couple of weeks and I'm finding I'm liking what we're getting on some scratch tracks with a TLM102 about 18" off the 12the fret angled slightly toward the sound hole and a Cascade fathead Ribbon over the shoulder with...
Your problem is you are plugging a line level signal from the line out into a devide that cannot handle line level (+4dBu) so you are going to have to heavily pad anything ro seriously turn down the volume on the amp
When you go into the front, you are sending a line level signal from your line...
I set up the guitar amp so that it sounds right, whether it be louder or quiter
Then I set up a mic to get the emphasis I want.
Then I play though and get the levels dancing around 0VU on my board by setting the Pres appropriately
Where that comes out on the computer will depend entirely on...
I think you're unlikely to hear much of a difference adding a small summing mixer. I have a dbox for some monitoring and hardware integration purposes myself and it is extremely clean. THD and cross talk are almost non existent and headroom is very high. It's not a piece to add color although...
I'll *usually* go with pedals and record the speaker in the room for a few reasons
1) I like the sound of a mic'd guitar amp without any VST nonsense involved
2) I play differently when I have the FX going, it sounds different playing clean and then effecting rather than playing through FX
3) I...
Now that's a rip off!
$40 for something that is wobbly as hell on an uneven stage, is easy to knock over or knock the amp off and doesn't perform any better than Auralex
No thanks, I've been burned before
Just Picked up an Auralex Gramma
Normally I avoid their stuff like the plague but since the Mopads work pretty well for my studio monitors and this was going for $40, I figured what the heck.
Decouples the amp from the floor and gives you more predictable bass response wherever you are...
I don't think a desert island one exists at that price point, in fact can you even get a ribbon mic at all at that price?
If I was going to a desert island with a bunch of mic geeks, I'd spend the $250 on food and then wait for someone to be hungry and thirsty enough to trade me a Royer R121...
Well since many of us home recordists forgo the Good Material; Good tracking spaces; Good mic technique; Good performances, Good editing; Good mixing spaces, Good monitors and Good mixing technique that the pros have........
It seems kinda silly to worry about good mastering at the end of the...
I've used several plugins and hardware (Still digital) Reverbs
The least offensive I found so far was the UAD EMT 140 plate. None of them I would say sound great though. I've found room mics and/or delay to be far more pleasing to hear over artificial reverbs almost every time
YMMV
Running a GAP 73 wide open is adding 80dB of gain to the mic's self noise, everything the mic picks up as well as 80dB of gain to the units own pre gain self noise
Typically at the very top of the gain range is where pres also become the most non linear and noisy too.
If you need 80dB of gain...
I've set myself a goal to learn a song a week for the next few months. I'll ask my kids what they like, ask my wife to pick something and then I bought some sheet music and tab for stuff I've never even listened to before.
So far I've done some bluegrass, A7X, Cure, Katy Perry, Metallica, No...
I've used M/S recording with some success a couple of times on guitar cabs.
Once when I just needed one single guitar track that I wanted to be a little fuller and feel like you were in the room without without having to resort to double tracks or ridiculous amounts of reverb etc
Once when I...
