right now almost all mobos for XP athlons are based on Via chipsets. The AMD 760 chipset is highly recommended on DAW forums, but I'm not sure it handles the XP... My advice would be to wait a couple of weeks to see how the new Nvidia-chipset mobos turn out in regards to stability...First...

I really don't know your current soundcard, but a Delta 1010 should be quite a step up... Swissonic/Lucid converters on 8 channels would be very expensive! What's your budget??

How many channels do you need? If one is enough, I'd think a dedicated A/D converter (Swissonic, Lucid) would be better...

I've been thinking about the same thing (also with an NTK), and I think it should be ok as long as you play acoustic stuff, and don't crank the volume (to avoid feedback) If you ever try it, tell us how it went!
