    Mother Board Toast

You can also buy a $20 PCI IDE controller card which will control 4 IDE devices. Although in general I agree that if you can afford to do so, its best to just upgrade your drives to SATA.

    Xp Sp3?

I have no idea about audio glitches. Its probably fine. When I work we have stopped pushing out SP3 due to two issues. First, printing problems with some (fairly obscure) applications. Second, problems getting remote control applications (including Remote Desktop) to work properly. But for...

new simple laptop (PC) based system

Yes, and going to Vista 64 will give you the comfort of finding out that most of your hardware doesn't have 64 bit drivers. :p

    16bit vs. 24bit?

I would say the best reason for 24 bit recording is better results using plug-in audio effects & processing. Better to do all your processing on a 24 bit file and THEN convert the final master to 16 bit.

new simple laptop (PC) based system

Here's a stupid question: why firewire over USB2? On paper USB2 is faster than firewire.

    Windows XP SP3 almost here

http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9079418&source=NLT_PM&nlid=8 Shouldn't be a big deal in functionality, its just a couple of years of hotfixes rolled into one file. But will be a big time saver when setting up a new XP installation.

Patching Old Sonic Foundry programs to register properly

This was probably posted here ages ago - but I figure I may as well pass my recent experiance on to those who may have missed it. If you are using an older Sonic Foundry program, like earlier versions of Sound Forge / ACID / Vegas, you know that when registering it tries to connect to a Sonic...

Looking for help with sudden onset of digital "beeps" into audio projects

OK! Well after some digging I have figured out what the problem is. And while there may be no easy solution, I managed to solve some other related problems during the trouble-shooting process. The problem was indeed improperly registered software. First, Sony plug-ins packaged with Sound...

Looking for help with sudden onset of digital "beeps" into audio projects

Well I think I'm getting closer to a diagnosis. Thanks for the input. First I went back and tried to duplicate the original problem I encountered - beeps introduced into .WAV files after converting from .MP3 files. I tried using Razor Lame ( http://lame.sourceforge.net/links.php#Windows )...

Looking for help with sudden onset of digital "beeps" into audio projects

Sony will not re-register Sonic Foundry products. Also, Sound Forge 5 is hard-coded to send its registration requests to a Sonic Foundry web site that no longer exists. Their line is "You are fucked, buy our newer version".

Looking for help with sudden onset of digital "beeps" into audio projects

Removing the cell phone didn't work. I'm not using Sonar - at least not in this case (I own a copy of Sonar 2.0), I'm using Sound Forge. I have a copy of Sound Forge 5 which I own, and a copy of Sound Forge 9 which I don't. They behave identically, recordings sound fine but modifications...

Looking for help with sudden onset of digital "beeps" into audio projects

Thanks, I'll try killing the cell phone next. I just finished some more troubleshooting. Disconnected from my LAN - no change. Disconnected all external USB devices (which were off anyway) - no change. Its weird - I can load a large audio file that was just recorded, it plays fine. I...

Looking for help with sudden onset of digital "beeps" into audio projects

Thanks for the replys. To respond.... Yes, there is a cell phone nearby. But all the recording is being done at line level (from a cassette deck through a mixer and into the 2496) so there is no "open mic". And the cell phone never went off during recording. Yes the beeps occur at exactly...

Looking for help with sudden onset of digital "beeps" into audio projects

Hey guys, I’m making a rare visit from The Cave back to the forum that originally brought me to HR. After a long drought I’ve been working on some audio files again. And I’ve been trouble shooting some rather bizarre computer behavior that recently started and I wanted to see if anyone else...

    Seagate External Hard Drive...which?

Absolutely correct! Buy an external case and then buy a drive to put in it. I used to think most external drives were like this, but recently I've seen several where the drive can't even be removed from the case! Screw that...

    Overrated Guitarists

Underrated: Donald "Buck Dharma" Roser from Blue Oyster Cult - coming from a country background and playing heavy metal, he has a sound and style unlike anyone else. Nils Loftgren - known now just as "springsteens guitarist", people forget his long solo carear and incredible sound & style...

What do people here use for DVD ripping?

Just curious - there are a lot of comercial & shareware products out there in the Windows XP world. If you want to rip a DVD movie to a AVI or MPEG file (for playing on an IPod for example), what are you peeps using? I'd also like something that can pull individual chapters out of movies.

    The Onyx 1620 mislead me

The general rule is that while you may want to use a limiter / compressor while recording, but EQ is for processing AFTER you record.

Cool - a Free Desktop PC is always welcome!

You should be able to buy an old P3 second hand for about $50. I would go that route rather than endure all the "promotional software testing".
