If you have a Mac, it probably has Garageband already installed. Why not mess around with that a little bit. It might give you an idea of what features you like, and what you will need. From there you can start directing your search a little bit more.

Looks like a solid review of a solid product. I'm still new to Cubase (used to use Cakewalk years ago) and am still getting into the hows / whats of LE4. For me, there's no need to upgrade just yet. For some of the more experienced folks I can see some of the tools being pretty good...

The latency is almost never the fault of the software from what I've experienced. It can be caused by a sound card if you're using a cheap one, but usually it will be the actual computer. If your computer isn't powerful enough then you will get lag when recording and playing back audio.

Overall it sounds very good. I do feel that the bass drum is a little lost in the mix, and the rhythm guitar could use a little more brightness (just a touch). The levels are all good beyond the bass drum. Nothing seems to be fighting for audio space.

Well I haven't had a chance to try this, having run into some other problems with my Cubase installation. I've got those sorted out (which I will detail in another thread shortly). However, tonight I do plan to check this out!

I would say that 90~95% of the time I play bass using a pick. The only time I'll use finger technique is when a song really requires it. Most of the music I play / write doesn't aim for that sort of sound.

If you weren't on PC I would say Garageband. It's really easy to get going. For PC I have only used Cubase and Reaper, both very briefly. I disliked Cubase a lot at first, but once I got it set up I started to warm up to it. Everyone here has made some good suggestions. Best thing to do now...

I'll agree that the vocals sound good, but the guitars are probably going to need a little more work smoothing them into the mix. I'm still a bit new to this myself though, so I sadly haven't got much in the way of input other than trying to EQ them a little bit. Good song though.
