Members average number of mics and a list...

Right now: (2) Behringer ECM8000 (2) Line Audio CM2 (SD cond.) (1) Beyer Dynamic M88 (1) Milab VIP-50 (LD cond.)

One very good all around microphone

Well, you already have a dynamic and a LD condenser (arguably not the best one though). Why don't you look into some ribbons or LD dynamics or SD condensers? Stepping up from an NT1 to a $2k LD condenser seems like trying to run before you can walk to me. Get a nice $1k one and a few Beyer...

    really nice pianos

The best grand I have ever touched was a Bösendorfer 290, and it was just incredible! But I don't think you absolutely need one of those to get a decent piano sound. :D And, yes they have an extended register in the bass down to C. And it looks rather cool because the color of those keys is...

Can somebody help me identify this?

Pfft, and not even a "thank you?" Don't you know that makes you Anti-Swedish? :D:D:D (Those lucky ones who have never been to the Dragon Cave may ignore that. And by the way, NEVER GO THERE!!! :))

Can somebody help me identify this?

That could very well be Routing Audio Via Ethernet. Never seen or used it, but at a time I had some ideas about going into business doing something similar. (I'm in the network industry.)

    $20,000 Mic Cabinet!!!!!!

Hey, you just spent half the dough on one of the mikes! :)

    Hammerfall!??

Ah, that one does not have any analog I/O, you would have to get separate AD/DA with ADAT interfaces. ADAT is just a way of transporting digital audio. (Because none of you guys are actually using those big VCR machines anymore are you? :D)

Tannoy Passive Relveals vs. Tannoy Active Reveals - bass response

I have only listened to the Actives and I didn't find the lack of bass a problem. But I didn't really like them anyway (and I had really hoped I would). There was something strange going on around the crossover frequency that I don't think I could get used to. On the other hand the Behringers...

    Hammerfall!??

There are a few different versions some just digital, some with analog I/O. Check it out on www.rme-audio.com

Help! The case of the dissapearing bass

Well, there is always the possibility that you have inverted one of the channels. If it's not that, one of the nicest ways to get nice even order harmonics in the lower registers is a little tube overdrive. But not too much! Mm, nice harmonics...

    Grotuitous post-count padding . . .

Well, I have to say I was pretty happy with the way he wrote. If that was half-assed he could easily compete with Douglas Adams in perfectionist half-assedness! And if you were trying to pad your count you could easily have divided that shit into ten treads! :)

    What's the best verb unit....

I think The Hit Factory has a faily decent EMT plate, that I'm sure they must really be embarrassed to have around in this digital age. Try calling them and see if you can have it for $500... :)

what are you buying yourself for christmas?

Monitors. (Probably Dynaudio bm6a or bm15a, since they're not hard to find. But perhaps PMC or ADAM if I get a chance to listen to them...)

I'd like to digitally record my grand piano... some help getting started? :)

I'll leave the gear stuff to the other guys, and tackle the room. The ambience of the room is the least of your problems. If it was just for lack of nice reverb tails you could easily just record it dry and add reverb later. (Even though it would never be as good as having recorded it in a...

    notation software

Well, high quality sounds is great. But I think a program that knows how to use the sounds makes a bigger difference, assuming you are not using really crappy FM synthesis... (Having both is always best! :) )

I'd like to digitally record my grand piano... some help getting started? :)

Oh, and if you'd really like to spend more money, get a decent pair of monitors. That way you'll have a chance of knowing what you are doing.

I'd like to digitally record my grand piano... some help getting started? :)

Well, get a pair of realatively cheap mics, a pair of mic stands and mic cords, and a cheap two channel preamp to go with it. (I live in Sweden so I would get the Line Audio small diafragm mics and their two channel preamp, http://www.lineaudio.se, but the other nice folks here can probably...

    notation software

Try out Igor Engraver by Noteheads. They were the first ones to actually think about realism, and its a lot cheaper than the others. Actually a lot of the new features in the latest years realeases of Finale and Sibelius are very much inspired by Igor. (Or so I've heard.) I'm not sure how stable...
