First Try with Some New Tracks

We're low on dough for pro-mixing; but it may yet happen--Hell we got the tracks recorded for a snowboard and some bindings. In the meantime, I'm trying to do the best I can in prepration for mastering by someone else. I can play with the EQ on the rhythm guitars and take down the lead a bit...

    Tell me what you think

My $0.02--bring up the drums (kick especially); maybe EQ a bit to get the snare and toms a little meatier. Bring the guitar down a tad. Alex

First Try with Some New Tracks

Thanks for listening Dennis. I hope everything's not out of tune  . Well, we're pretty much a garage band anyway so I won't sweat it. Thanks for the bump. Alex

First Try with Some New Tracks

We did some recording at a nice studio up in Burbank and now I'm trying to mix it all together. It's a big step up from my usual have-everyone-play-at-once-and-record-it-all-on-eight-tracks routine so I'm in new territory. I've been jerking things around for about a month and am fairly happy...

    home depot resilient channels

More than likely they are. Home Depot occasionally carries them. If it's RC-1 that's the stuff you want. One side gets screwed to your studs and the other side floats off with your gyp board attached to it. Alex

Ok, I think i'm ready to build :)

Not sure what the vinyl barrier buys you. For my money, I'd go with two layers of gyp board attached to RC channel screwed directly to your studs. Everything else as you described. Alex

    Digital Mastering Tools-free

Right on, I appreciate it. I've been wanting to get a program like this to tweak my mixes with and free is always good. Thanks, Alex

    window treatment

I built one out of 2x3 timber framing with a slightly oversized chunk of MDF that extends over the borders of the window. Nailed a garage door gasket to seal it against the wall and filled the space within the frame with 703 insulation--works great. A couple of handles make it removable and a...

You know how a dog will look at you and sometimes cock his head from side to side?

The density of OC 703 is 3.0 lbs/cu. ft.; so at 1-inch, this works out to 0.25 lbs/sq. ft. There are 10 sheets in a box. Rockwool is definitely more affordable. I picked up 2-in batts, 2.5 lbs/cu. ft. for $34.75/box with 12 2x4 batts in a box. IMHO, the 703 is easier to work with and attach...

    Diagnosing a Horn Problem

It appears the horn went out on one of our old Yamaha floor monitors. I pulled it apart and saw the diaphragm was corroded. Took it to a speaker repair/parts place, guy checked it, and said it was still getting a current through it. He recommended against getting a new diaphragm without...

You know how a dog will look at you and sometimes cock his head from side to side?

It's expensive stuff; and contrary to popular opinion, you can get it from Home Depot on special order. At my local spot (near San Diego, CA), the minimum order quantity is 25 boxes of the stuff. Here's what I got: 13 boxes of 1-in 2x4 sheets at $58.80/box ($5.89/sheet) 7 boxes of of 2-in 2x4...

Control Room help (first time builder)

Here's my shot at an explanation. A panel resonator is just that. Your paneling which encloses a sealed volume of air resonates at a certain frequency depending on the volume of the cavity and mass of the panel. The insulation is intended to absorb the energy and dissipate it as heat so it...

Finishing up home studio ... mounting carpet on walls?

Haven't heard of anyone doing it because, as you say, the acoustic benefit is negligible. No idea how to get it onto a wall and have it look acceptable; maybe talk to a carpet installer. Alex

    Advice for electrical outlets ?

If you mount the boxes to the studs, you can get PVC box extenders at Home Depot to make up the gap (there's some sitting out in my truck, so if you need a manufacturers name, let me know). For isolation, caulk the gaps between the boxes and the sheetrock; also, the conduit entry ports into the...
