finally discovered use of "remote" for automation

my digital mixer allows me to do automation, but will only let me change the first "knob" of the fx send. In my case, I put in a Sonitus:fx delay and could only automate the delay time but not the pan. So I finally 'discovered' the remote feature which lets you assign a midi parameter (wheel...

Vocal Recording: 1 take vs. punch-ins?

I like to lay down 5 complete takes of the lead vocal and then pick and choose the parts I like. I'm of the opinion that punch-ins often lack soul. for "ad-lib" tracks, I prefer for the vocalist to ad-lib over the whole thing. then i can pick, choose, and move them around.

I want an 88 full-weighted midi controller. Suggestions?

I have the Fatar/StudioLogic SL880 as well. great action. i've had it for over 10 years now. i use it with a Roland XV-3080 sound module.

    Sonar sampling rate problem

i've never heard of on-the-fly upsampling within the project.

    Problem exporting to MP3

WHY? is there something wrong with SONAR's MP3 encoder? Also, if you want to use LAME instead of CWENC this link will show you how to incorporate LAME into the process so you don't have to export to WAVE first: http://sonar.sonarama.com/sonar/index.php/LAME_MP3_Encoder If the above link...

Not Gonna Give Up new track by me and PGT

the beat and instrumentation are so close to LL's "doing it well" that its a distraction from your lyrics. the rapper on the first verse needs to do a better job tracking the beat. its better to leave a word out or even make it mumbled than to have it miss the timing. he was doing fine until...

    Save The Hip-hop!!!

had time so i listened to the tracks on your site. your not breaking any new ground, but your not without talent. the r&b/pop tracks are better produced than the NY, and South beats that you have. Bitter Exes was disappointing because when it first came on i got this Mobb Deep Shook Ones vibe...

Mixing out from the computer to a REAL BOARD

i don't. it goes into sonar and it stays in sonar (recording and mixing). but i do control the individual sonar tracks with an external digital mixer (tascam fw-1884).

What direction would you like hip hop to go?

a significant part of Hip Hop is about business instead of art. what can you do to help you say? Call the FCC every time you hear any Hip-Hop song with offensive (i.e. Adult themed) lyrics playing on black radio. Until local urban radio stations get fined for playing this type of music...

    24 vs 16

i was recording in 48khz so that the extra 10% worth of information will help me get the most accurate interpretation of the sound and have more to work with during all the mix processing (EQ, compression, autotune, delay, reverb, etc...). SEKD RedRoaster [i.e. Samplitude Master] converts the...

    24 vs 16

littledog: i don't have sessions that span 7 or 8 DVDs. although i play in a band, i'm essentially a one-man band (the black Dave Grohl... well... the broke Dave Grohl) and i record 1 song at a time. the longest/largest track count song that I have (real drums, real congos, real timbales) is a...

    24 vs 16

dude you are missing the point. the stairstep shows you how much of the original signal will be present in the recorded signal. what gets "recorded" are the stairsteps that are represented in the graphic. what gets heard as a result of the Digital-to-Analog converters is the sine wave that...

    Recording (non-real) Drums??

i do all of my drum programming in midi (usually the kick is C3 for GM (general midi) drum kits by the way). get yourself a small USB midi piano keyboard like the Edirol PC-50 and do-it-yourself. Sonar offers quantize and groove-quantize to help you line things up if you are off a bit. and...

Do I need an external hard drive?

i have a single drive on my dell inspiron e1705 and never have any problems. having said that... a 20gb drive is small so your going to need to either keep your tracks on a separate drive or burn them to CD/DVD.

keep the midi? or chuck it?

the problem is that the tascam fw-1884 will assign a channel to the midi track even if its archived. once i've converted the midi track to audio, i archive and hide the midi tracks, but the digital mixer still allocates a channel to them. i've decided to put all of the midi tracks into a track...

    tascam fw1082

i haven't used a plethora of software products for music. i've been using cakewalk (in its various versions) for the past 16 years. i am currently using Sonar v5. i have also used SEKD Samplitude. Sonar works excellently with the Tascam FW line.

keep the midi? or chuck it?

I've been keeping my midi in the same file and removing it from view via track manager. however, doing so, affects my digital mixer because it still "sees" the tracks. i've been thinking about keeping the original midi in a separate file.

POLL: What Sample Rate/Bandwidth do you use for recording?

i record in 24/48 with the belief that recording at what was the highest sample-rate possible would give me the best opportunity to create pollish-ready turds. i tried 24/88.2 on a song few months ago but never completed the tracks. i figured it would be easier for the processor to cut every...

    Just Got Two New Mics

you mean buying new cables? or cutting the cables? i would recommend purchasing cables at the desired length. the rule of thumb is the shorter the better. longer cables lose signal. but the length in question isn't of concern.
