Which studio headphones should I buy?

I've been searching for a new set of studio headphones for several months now, I currently own a pair of $20 studio headphones that have been surprisingly accurate compared to my Behringer truth monitors. The only reason I'm upgrading is not because of the quality, but because after 4 years of...

    VST strings for metal

I've used Nexus for nearly all synths on my bands progressive metal album, and Nexus is primarily a Dance/Trance Rompler type thing. It's a whole 16 gigs but the classical section actually has some synths and strings that sound freaking awesome and have super fast attack (depending on the...

    Live upright piano test

Thanks Chuck :) I'll definitely give that article a good read-through, SOS have super-helpful articles. Hmm, ah well I'll just leave it alone. No point, it was just for the fun of it. It is an intro to one of my bands newer songs we're working on so we'll be re-recording it anyway on a tuned...

    Live upright piano test

Hey, I was at my friends house and we had a condenser mic kicking around so we set it up and recorded this little diddy on an upright piano. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how it sounds/any suggestions for improving the sound...

    Metal mixificationizer

haha, well the song was written by my Spanish friend so I have no idea what any of that title means :D Okay Any tips on how I could crush the keyboard with my guitar? Nope, just a bunch of freeware :D Again not my composition, but sure :p Alright, I'll bring the volume back up again... or is...

    Metal mixificationizer

Hey folks, Finally (almost) finished this metal mix I've been working on-and-off on since October. I've still got to time correct some parts, add in some more layers and spot effects and then finishing editing the music video for it... by the end of February :D Anyway, here's the link to the...

I have a guitar pedal with a MIDI out, I want to use it to trigger samples in Cubase.

Thanks for the reply, I don't think I explained myself properly. What I want to do is use this guitar pedal which sends MIDI out into my laptop and from there it would trigger a sample that would get played in Cubase 6. I figured there must be an easy way to send the MIDI data to a "note", as I...

I have a guitar pedal with a MIDI out, I want to use it to trigger samples in Cubase.

Hi, I have a boss GT6 guitar pedal with a MIDI out and I have the pedal hooked up to Cubase 6 and am getting a MIDI signal whenever I press one of the pedals. What I want to do is convert the MIDI data to, lets say a note... like C1 or something. From there I would have a sample loaded up in...

How to make an instant transition between two songs?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll look into a PQ editor John, think you could recommend one that is pretty easy to use? Would that mean that I would have to remaster the songs inside of the PQ editing software? I'm very new to the whole mastering process and software, I've just spent awhile...

Is Mastering needed in Extreme Metal?

I don't know what mastering means but I always tweak the bounced final mix in terms of EQ/loudness/multiband compression to make sure it sounds good through everything. Then again, my final mixes usually have a bit of mud to them that I like to clean up.

How to make an instant transition between two songs?

Hey, I'm just finishing up mastering my bands EP and am wondering how do some engineers make one song seemingly flow into another? It's weird, because when the end of a song reaches 0 seconds, it will go to -2 seconds before switching songs. I assume this means that it has gone 2 seconds into...

Where are my track presets located?!?!?!!!!!

I'm running Cubase 6 on a Mac, can anyone shed some light on where I might find my track presets? I want to move a bunch of track presets I made on my Mac onto my PC but I can't find the folder that they're located in, I checked the packaged contents folder but they weren't there! :confused...

Huge Mix! Super duper heavy, but...

Thanks Jimmy! I'll go through those two things, I probably should take a listen to the song through a system with a sub :D Cheers!

My latest attempt at getting good results with vst amp sims and impulses.

Kick sounds good, but is a little too loud and compressed. Guitars are a little too scooped sounding for me, but you could use that to your advantage with a mid-ripping bass tone. Yeah, the biggest issue is the lack of bass guitar, it's too weak and in the background. Try making two bass...

Huge Mix! Super duper heavy, but...

Hey, here's a progressive metal song/mix that's been brewing for about half a year now, it's so close to being done, there's just a couple things I have to do, one of those things is get some feedback from the amazing engineers on this forum! :) There's just one thing though... I'm having...

    Mixing in headphones

I'd never mix solely on headphones like the way I'd never mix solely on monitors. TimOBrien's link is a good read.

    Cubase...6...

The new guitar amp sims are decent, you can get some pretty nice cleans out of them. Halion Sonic SE has A LOT of decent sounds, it's no Spectrasonic or reFX but it's a hell of a lot better than the Halion One bloatware. Try it out!

    Hissing when recording bass

Filth in your electronics, bad patch cable, I have a fast track ultra and it's relatively low-noise as long as you're not cranking the gain, so I doubt it's in the interface. If it's not a horrible hiss then just slap a noise gate on it. I get minor hissing with my bass tracks (especially...

Bose QuietComfort 15 Headphones for Studio Work (mixing)

Also, soundstage and imaging is important. Doesn't matter whether or not the headphones are open or closed, however I would prefer that the headphones be closed so that I can do mixing on the go, but my main concern is a flat, detailed frequency response and imaging.
