Keliza, I'm really a newbie too, but I downloaded Cool edit 2000 demo, and it doesn't work for multitrack recording, what you will need for multitrack recording is cool edit pro, I've used a little and it's pretty easy to use...
It doesn't support MIDI though...

I was also looking for a mixer under $100 and I came up with a Phonics and It sucked... but there was also a behringer in the store fot 100 bucks!!
