Greg_L mix contest/clinic/critique - just for shits and grins

Damn you and your awesome home recording abilities Greg. I got this up in Cubase and thought "what the shit, this is pretty much done!" But after enjoying the tune I did what I would do if it was my own song and realised I'd spent 1 hour and 1/2 of my evening on this. Now I'm tired and...

    A few Cubase SX questions

Thanks for all your helps guys. I'll be giving this stuff a go at the weekend, I'm sure it'll work! Thanks again.

    Firewire Interface Options

I use a Presonus FP 10 with a Dell Laptop running Windows 7. I bought a bog standard Firwire PCI-E card from Maplins. While I was reading how to get my FP working with Windows 7 (if you go down this route message me and I'll send you the link, as when I was doing this they had no drivers from...

Greg_L mix contest/clinic/critique - just for shits and grins

I'll def give this a download. Always hoped something like this would pop up so I can practice my mixing without the hassle of writing another song (I think my band will soon be sick of having a drummer who writes music and lyrics). Whether I'll have the balls to put it up here is still...

    Recording Metal and Rock

This is actually a really good point; I got carried away trying to help you avoid issues I had. I think some of the software out would solve most drum issues and they seem perfectly suited to modern metal. I personally wouldn't use them, but I don't play metal and I'm a drummer, so the...

    A few Cubase SX questions

Apologies if this has been answered before, or it should be in the newb forum, but I couldn't find anything on search and I thought this would be the best place to go... ...so I've got a new comp and put Cubase SX on it and now tracks (and splitting tracks etc) are all snapping to grid. First...

    The 90s Sound

Me neither, but I do the same.... well they start off with that style in mind, and tend to morph into alsorts, lol. Glad I've finally got a band sorted though, it means I don't have worry as much about trying to write "cool basslines". Anyway, I'll stop waffling about my love of the Clash and...

    The 90s Sound

That's what I love about Simonon; from not knowing how to play, to recording some of the best known basslines around.

    Recording Metal and Rock

Now, I'm no expert on recording, and most of what I know has come from this site, but when it comes to recording drums here's what I'd suggest. Look at the Recorderman method - Google it, Youtube it, learn it, love it. Research Mics - based on the recorderman method try and find some suitable...

Guitarist wants to learn drums...what kit?

Do you know what kit he had? I've got a PDP CX kit and the only thing that wasn't great about it is what you'd expect, the snare. Obviously I had to put decent heads on it, but I've kept the hardware, I thought the cymbals stands were pretty damn good, they've got a wide base, so they...

Noob question about Electronic Drum kits

When I'm setting up midi, would still have a track per pad, almost like close micing a real kit? Also, I've a cheap kit with a usb output, anyone got any experience with this?

Noob question about Electronic Drum kits

Ok, so I've been thinking about my recording situation, and I've got almost all I need for both demoing songs as well as doing proper recordings for "the public". What I was thinking is that I could do with an electronic kit that I can just plug in and hit record with, as my current option...

To dampen or not to dampen...

I can't stress how important this is. Before you start dampening either have a jam with a band or do some recording and re-assess when you hear the full mix. I've been playing drums alone in my garage for a while now (think I've finally found a band though!) and when it came to doing some...

    Line 6 Poll

I'm thinking of getting either POD 2.0 and footswitch or a floor POD. My intial thought was to get the POD, then split the output between the amp and the PA we use in our practice space. I figure this would also work well live when we need to get the guitar out there. I also figured I can use...

    Big washy dark cymbals...

Funny you should mention that. Back in the day (when I was 17...) I used to use my dad's Paiste 2002s that he had since the 70's. I once let another band use them who went on before us and when I got on stage I found a crack and the band gone. My dad never really got over that and I never...

    Amp help

Right, I don't know as much as many who have posted before me and I know nothing about you, but what I do know is that while you're young and you've got no bills to pay and other people who rely on you is the best time to get a shitty job and blow your money on the best gear you can get with...

    Cubase export quality

May be a silly question, but have you checked the quality that you are saving the file as? I think Cubase often defaults to a low quality.

    What's wrong with my mix?

I just played it and it sounds loud enough. There's no significant difference between that and the podcast I'm listening too. The track itself is really well recorded and mixed. Wish I had the skills to be left with an end product like that.

Building a Speaker Cabinet for Guitar: Wiring and Theory

Thanks to everyone's responses so far, things are starting to make sense. I realise that ohmage of the speakers shouldn't be lower than the ohmage amp (so if total ohmageof speakers=4ohms but your amp=8ohms that's bad); but if it's higher(speaker=16ohms and amp=8ohms) is that good or bad. What...
