    Modded TCM1150 APEX460 disaster

Oh yeah, I forgot I pulled C6 from mine. I think that is done to taste, would be a big deal. Glad you got yours going though. Would love to hear how it sounds!

    Modded TCM1150 APEX460 disaster

What is your voltage at P1? Also, are you sure your primaries are tied together with ground like that? I couldn't find any other discrepencies with your sketch, but double check it with my schematic, which is correct: http://www.angelfire.com/ky3/craigorris74/a460schemCFremoved.JPG Craig

CAD E-70, CTM-1000a, and Astatic CTM-1000a. Good deal / find??

Ugh, I just opened one up. Surface mount components from hell!

    Apex 460 capacitor change?

I didn't think C6 was in the signal path?

CAD E-70, CTM-1000a, and Astatic CTM-1000a. Good deal / find??

They look all look exactly the same. The CTM-1000A is NOT a CAD mic, although designed and manufactured by them. So if you order from guitar center or musician's friend, you're going to get Astatic mics.

    Apex 460 capacitor change?

Unscrew the screws on the side of the transformer shield/case and the xlr plug and housing.

Tube mic VS. SS mic w/tube preamp?

Yes, the tube does color the sound (as does every part in the signal path, especially transformers and signal path caps) but there is no "standard" tube color sound. My transistorized Neve preamps add far more color to my signal than my hand built tube mic pres. People building high end tube...

Tube mic VS. SS mic w/tube preamp?

The tube is not used to enhance the sound. It is used to amplify the sound.

Art tube mp as a DI box

Can't comment on the DI of this thing. But you can buy a radial passive DI for less than $150 with a Jensen transformer. I've built passive DI's with Jensen, Lundahl, and Cinemag transformers and they all sound great. If you had a good sounding preamp, I buy a transformer balanced passive DI...

    Better Mic For britt's Vox

I think in the price range your talking, you've got few options, if you want to buy something that you won't grow to regret later. Remember, wWhen purchasing the cheaper chinese tube mics, you always run a very good risk of buying one with the midrange nightmares of the RODE. Quality control...

    tube mic questions

The great tube German tube pres had extremely high headroom and were very hi-fi. Not a lot of harmonic distortion going on. Makes me leery when starved plate devices talk about the only good thing about a tube is distortion. However, some tube devices (and their solid state counterparts) can...

    tube mic questions

Just curious, why would a 10K peak scare you?

    tube mic questions

They use XLR, but generally no phantom. MOST cheaper condensers that retail for less than $1000 don't warm up anything, just impart strange peaks throughout the frequency range (often in the upper midrange which makes them sound harsh). In general, a $300 tube condenser will sound much worse...

    Nady 1050 Voltages

Got everything working! Thanks so much for everone that chimed in and kept me going. mbrebes's tip on the pin 4 to pin 9 voltage solved my problem. Fired it up and initial indications is that it's a nice, thick sounding mic. Will do comparisons later. The schemitic link at the top now...

    Nady 1050 Voltages

OK, I'll disconnect pin 5. Nothin at between 9 and 4. I'll examime that. Thanks for your help, mbrebes.

    Nady 1050 Voltages

I finally got a glowing tube yesterday, and my voltages seem to be reasonable. However, I knocked a wire or two off the tube socket when putting the body back together. Now I've got no glowing tube again. I'm using a different power supply in case your wondering why the plate supply is higher...

Fixed the direction of the electros in the schematic. I had them in correctly, though.

    I don't think my C8 is polar. It's a big Ansar.

    Nady 1050 Voltages

The output voltage of the power supply is 106V @ B+ and around 20V at the Variable Voltage pin. I'll check out C2 and see whats there.
