I'm strongly thinking of buying a 16 track, looking at the Fostex and Tascam offerings. I found a local MSR16 and the guy says its in excellent shape, and I can go try it out at his studio. Any advice when Im there? Are these prone to any special problems other than typical reel to reel stuff...

It is! You're right...I had to dig it out (the real manual) vs the stupid scanned and incomplete version on my computer. Ive never calibrated this thing, in 3 years of owning it. It came set up and aligned...but I feel its time to check and adjust it. I am going to purchase the correct tape...

So I opened up my Tascam 22-2 to check and adjust calibration, but I realized there's no info on what the pots do in the manual!! For example my Fostex 80 clearly states what each one does and when to adjust. And I have no trouble keeping it calibrated. Any help with the 22-2?

Well my favorite combo was DMP3 and FMR RNC on kick and snare and overheads right into mixer, no compressor. Did some tests today. Really subtle settings on the compressor, just a little push and so there's not much "clipping". I am going for a more modern rock sound, and this worked...

I generally compress every instrument when I track, a little bit at least. The RNC can be very subtle at times but it's there. Going for a big rock sound... Im thinking start off with compression over kick and snare on mixer pres and overheads on DMP3, then I'll try it the other way.

I posted this in "recording techniques" and got nothing, so I erased my post. Think I'll stick to the analog forum. I have already been getting a decent drum sound with just my mixer (mackie 1642-VLZ), but recently got an outboard preamp (DMP3)that I'd like to try on a drum recording next...

Thanks, I actually ended up with a DMP3 over the rane...couldnt find a good deal on the FMR... Im pretty impressed with the DMP3 for the $...2 channels, and I got it for $130 brand new.

Im using the Delta's MIDI in and out. Already recording at 16-bit, 44.1 khz..the software is Reaper.

I am Tracking on tape (Fostex model80), dumping to my DAW (windows 7, Delta 1010LT, JLC pps-2 syc box, MTC) When I play back the transferred tracks which are chasing the tape machine not only am I getting random pops and clicks (only when sycing), but also they are not perfectly in sync, random...

Tape machines won't play back perfectly with digital tracks and will slightly drift at parts. You need to use a sync box like JLC PPS-2 to start with when doing something like that.

I posted it there, and before someone there tells me that I should just ditch the tape and sync box and should be tracking digitally for "better fidelity" and easier recordings... I was hoping someone here could just recommend another recording software to try this out on so we can see if the...

It's an older version, a couple years ago. I tried the new version and didn't really like it.

The DAW will play in sync when I hit play on my deck, but wont record...that's why I have to open two...doesn't make sense, but whatever works.
