    micing up a 15W amp

i am 100% in agreement with the folks who advise that a smaller, great-sounding amp is plenty useful live. if you're playing in a place with a PA, you can certainly mic it. if it doesn't have a PA, and you aren't bringing one, i presume that it is small enough for that 15-watter to cut through...

    my 64' sg

it's still a great guitar. enjoy it! i saw a '60s SG in the classifieds at least 10 years ago in the classifieds for like $225-some old woman selling stuff her kid didn't want. i lament not picking up on that, though i was too young to make a purchase.

    Ok...Fretting Hand

i get pain and then cramps, not numbness-i'm guessing it's some other kind of RSI. i usually cramp up when pressing on the back of the neck with my thumb to complement the force of my fingers for barre or movable chord positions. i use my thumb to fret low notes all the time, usually for...

    rookie question about tone...

the mesa boogie v-twin is a monster, speaking of tube overdrive. wow. it would be worth the time to find and try one of these. almost everything sounds pretty good when it's blasting straight into your ear. until the point at which sound gets annoying/painful, louder is generally considered...

    Drop D tuning

i play quite a bit in dadgad/drop d/cgcgce, and i use a custom set with a rather heavy e and lighten other strings. for acoustic (my usual choice), i go 56-42-32-25-16-11. will have to monkey around some to pick for electric, since i'm not playing electric regularly.

good music from crappy a mic?

if you are a genius at production, you can record on crap. for the rest of us, i would tend to advise shooting for slightly better than crap, and ramping up the competence level. i know that's my game plan.

    What's your vocal range?

with a little variation, from about C2 to about C5 (sometimes, E2 is the lowest i can hit-i need to work on this with a real teacher! also, the transition between regular and falsetto is practiced enough that while i can FEEL the difference, i don't really think "i need this voice to hit this...

The most important technical factor in singing?

resonance, vocally, is basically about having enough of a sense of posture/breath/effort to produce the most sound with the least amount of effort. the human voice is extensively tweakable via breathing, posture, tongue placement, jaw position, use/disuse of various cavities, etc. all is so...

first post in here-all feedback appreciated

i recorded with an audix-om3xb (hypercardioid dynamic), up pretty close when i could, but the levels kept pegging themselves when i'd ramp up for the choruses on love, hate, love, and the only thing i could come up with at the time (a couple/few years back, now!) was to not only lean back a few...

i'm guessing that avatar is a rendered one-i know mine is a screenshot, hence the "character marks"-heh. i'd still love actual feedback on the music if anyone gets around to it.

Need decent printer for jewel box inserts

Myx62, i agree that the newer desjkets are pretty shoddily built compared to the old ones-but so are most inkjets these days  i was cz certified back when inkjets didn't have to go to corvallis to be worked on (deskjet, desket 500/550 500c/550c)-nice and simple, and you could get...

Do you believe that there are rules to good melody writing?

here's one actual rule that tends to be pretty important in writing melodies that either i missed or was not mentioned: make sure your melody follows an audible path. by this, i mean that between 2 chords, in most cases, you want one of the following 2 things to happen: 1. at least one note...

    Favorite guitar player quotes.

it's probably worth noting that page didn't consider himself that great a guitarist, either. he always noted his own sloppiness, or at least does lately when asked. hendrix, while amazing, was not a technician, but a sonic visionary who happened to play the guitar. i consider page in the same boat.

...trying to fight off the urge to order...

i have a '90 explorer (i think it is also a '76 reissue) with that bigass coffin case that i am probably going to unload pretty soon. great condition. i'm not sure i want to part with it for $800, though. well, maybe. that might actually be around its value. anyone know?

    Using quality cables

my feeling about instrument cables is that you will usually do ok as long as you aren't running crappy/broken ones, or plugging them into flaky jacks. my practical experience tells me that crappy cables break/short easily. this is very bad. pricier ones are less prone to do so. i always get ones...

first post in here-all feedback appreciated

i hang out in many of the other forums, but don't have broadband, and so i usually don't manage to download many of the songs (though that 1.5-hr compose/perform/record challenge really entertained me), and haven't felt like i should post much as of yet. i guess i changed my mind: i have a link...

    Realistic opinion please.

actually, most of us hanging out here are "the amateurs", by virtue of the fact that we're trying to record music in our homes. that said, there are some seriously talented people hanging out on this board, many of whom have some real world experience.

    Singing lesson for different genres...

thanks! (i guess i should post this link over in the mp3 forum)-the title is alone-i think all of those files have d1 appended to them to denote that they are my first attempt at demo recordings for each song. i haven't gone back for any of them yet, though i should be able to improve my results...

    Singing lesson for different genres...

sean, thanks! i've relied a great deal on how i feel while singing, which covers some of what real lessons teach, though i'm hoping to refine it somewhat. chris, duly noted. i will have to experiment more with mic placement/etc, especially now that i have somewhat better equipment. i'll be...
