I'd prefer a laptop. If you do only big recording gigs, it doesn't matter. But if you just go track a few tracks, for ex some sax lines or something, you don't need all that. Just take the laptop, and a small rack with the external soundcard and some pres. One micstand, a mic and cables and...

Thanks to Gordo I know that these thinks exist!!! I need them for my new gig... I'm running a laptop with Ableton Live, and this allows me to play with live musicians on a improvisational base. And I can record and loop them while playing. But to do that with FOH mixing, I need splitters...

Here's an easy way to test it; try the setup with a condensor that NEEDS phantom power. If the condensor works as it is supposed to, you can kick my ass next year. Phantom power will NOT go thru an outboard pre. In fact, your outboard pre might get DAMAGED TOO if you hook it up to a mic pre...
